NNPP insists no link between Kwankwaso and extremists

The New Nigeria Peoples Party has rejected moves in the United States to sanction its national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, insisting there is no evidence tying him to any extremist organisation. NNPP campaign secretary Folashade Aliu said on Channels Television that the proposed bill, which also mentions Miyetti Allah groups, is unjust and malicious. She challenged the bill’s sponsors to present any proof they claim to have against Kwankwaso. Aliu questioned why one individual would be singled out in a country of over 260 million people on an issue as sensitive as religion and terrorism. She argued that the focus on Kwankwaso raises serious doubts about the true intent behind the legislative move. According to her, even a small fraction of Nigeria’s population in leadership positions would still amount to many people capable of offering solutions to national problems. She […]

In response, Cubana Chief Priest answered yes and said it was not a crime, noting that he had actually worked for Obi in the last election even while serving as a special adviser to an APC governor. His remark sparked mixed reactions, including from a follower who referred to his past issues with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Rowdy Senate session as clause on real time results is dropped

The Senate held a tense and rowdy plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers revisited last Wednesday’s decision on a key clause in the Electoral Act amendment bill. The uproar followed moves to alter the provision on electronic transmission of election results. Trouble began when Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno, citing Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders 2023, asked the chamber to rescind its earlier decision on Clause 60(3) of the bill. His motion, seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi, sought to adjust the language of the clause. According to page 45 of the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Clause 60(3) originally states that the presiding officer shall electronically transmit results from each polling unit to the IReV portal in real time after Form EC8A has been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by […]

Obi leads NASS protest over real time result transmission

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Monday led a protest at the National Assembly demanding the restoration of real time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The protest, tagged Occupy the National Assembly, drew hundreds of members of the Obidient Movement and civil society groups, who described the removal of the phrase real time as a setback for electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate had recently passed the Electoral Act 2022 Repeal and Reenactment Amendment Bill 2026, but critics faulted the decision to delete real time from sections on electronic transmission of results. They argued that this change could weaken safeguards against vote manipulation. Lawmakers have insisted that electronic transmission of results remains in the law, but protesters said removing the real time clause could allow post election interference […]

Atiku has been contesting presidency since my NYSC days, says Baba Ahmed

Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed, says he is shocked that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is still seeking the presidency in 2027. He recalled that Atiku has been pursuing the nation’s top job since his own National Youth Service Corps days and has already contested several times without success. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Baba Ahmed argued that Nigeria urgently needs a new generation of leaders. He said many capable Nigerians are ready to address the country’s problems but are discouraged by an expensive, difficult political system dominated by godfathers and broken promises. He stressed that his comments were not a declaration for the 2027 presidential race. Baba Ahmed explained that he only reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party and did not announce any ambition, adding that future decisions will depend […]

Sowore condemns US airstrikes on Nigerian soil

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has strongly criticised the recent United States military strikes on Nigerian soil. He described the attacks as a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty and a dangerous step for the country. Sowore argued that no foreign country has the right to launch military operations inside Nigeria under any guise. He said allowing such actions sends a signal that Nigeria cannot protect itself and is willing to hand over its security to external powers. He also faulted the Nigerian government for what he called weakness and complicity. According to him, the authorities should have openly rejected the US airstrikes instead of agreeing to or tolerating them. Sowore warned that foreign military involvement rarely solves internal security problems. He pointed to past US interventions in countries like Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan, saying they often left […]
