INEC fixes February 20, 2027 for presidential poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed February 20, 2027, for Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections. The Commission said the date is in line with constitutional and Electoral Act provisions that require election notices to be issued at least 360 days before voting. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced the timetable at a press briefing in Abuja, formally opening the process for the 2027 general elections. He explained that only INEC has the legal power to set election dates and urged politicians and the public to ignore unofficial timetables circulating in the media. Ndume warns northern anger over Tinubu may shape future elections

Senator Ali Ndume has warned that growing dissatisfaction in the North over the current state of governance could have serious electoral consequences if not addressed. National Assembly seeks faster election justice

The National Assembly’s Constitution Review Committee has proposed that all election petitions must be decided before winners are sworn into office.​Lawmakers also want tribunals to conclude election petitions within 60 days and appellate courts to deliver judgments on related appeals within another 60 days.​ Under the proposal, the Supreme Court will handle all presidential election petitions as a court of first instance, with its decisions on such cases to be delivered within 60 days of filing.​Appeals from governorship election petitions will end at the Court of Appeal, which must also give its decisions within 60 days.​ The recommendations are part of 44 harmonised constitution amendment bills now before both chambers of the National Assembly for debate.​They include changes to Sections 232, 239 and 286 of the 1999 Constitution to shorten timelines for pre-election and post-election cases.​ For pre-election cases, the […]

Presidency rejects claim of secret tax law changes

The Presidency has rejected allegations that it secretly altered provisions of Nigeria’s new tax reform laws, insisting that no changes were made outside the proper legal and legislative process. Tight security as Tinubu heads to NASS to present 2026 budget

Security has been significantly tightened around the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives.
