Presidency rejects claim of secret tax law changes

The Presidency has rejected allegations that it secretly altered provisions of Nigeria’s new tax reform laws, insisting that no changes were made outside the proper legal and legislative process. The denial comes as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, opposition parties and several civil society groups demand a halt to implementation and a thorough investigation.​ President Bola Tinubu signed four tax reform bills into law, which together form what the government calls the most far reaching overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system in decades. Tight security as Tinubu heads to NASS to present 2026 budget

Security has been significantly tightened around the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives. Extra armed policemen have been deployed to all main entry points, including the MOPOL Gate, the Villa Gate and the Annex Gates.​ Access to the complex has been strictly restricted to accredited persons. DSS sues Sowore, X, Meta over anti-Tinubu post

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, alongside X Corp (formerly Twitter) and Meta Platforms Inc., over posts critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Dino Melaye Faces Court Over Alleged ₦509.6m Tax Evasion

A former senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has been dragged before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate Court over alleged evasion of ₦509.6 million in personal income taxes for 2023 and 2024. According to filings, the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) accused Mr. Melaye of failing to pay his assessed Personal Income Tax of ₦234.9 million (2023) and ₦274.7 million (2024), totaling ₦509,608,000.00. Past Underpayments In addition to the recent assessments, FCT-IRS said Mr. Melaye underpaid his taxes in 2020, 2021, and 2022.
