13 Reps Switch Parties as Chinda Resigns as Minority Leader

Thirteen members of the House of Representatives have switched political parties in a major political realignment that has reshaped the party composition in the 10th National Assembly. The mass defection comes as Ahmad Chinda, the former Minority Leader of the House, has resigned from his position, marking a significant shift in the legislative landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Chinda's resignation as Minority Leader has triggered speculation about the future direction of opposition politics in the National Assembly. The representatives who switched parties represent various constituencies across Nigeria and their defections have altered the balance of power between the ruling party and the opposition in the lower chamber of the National Assembly. The move has been described as one of the largest party-switching incidents in recent Nigerian political history. Political analysts say the defections reflect growing fluidity in Nigeria's […]

Court Dismisses Suit Seeking to Bar Kingibe From ADC Activities

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed an urgent application seeking to bar Senator Ireti Kingibe from participating in activities of the African Democratic Congress following her alleged suspension from the party. Justice Peter Lifu on Thursday rejected an ex parte application filed by leaders of the ADC in Wuse Ward of the Federal Capital Territory who claimed the FCT lawmaker had been suspended over alleged anti-party activities. Instead of granting the request the judge directed the plaintiffs to put the senator on notice to appear in court and respond to their allegations. The judge ruled that discretion in requests for prohibition from party activities and in political matters must be exercised judicially and judiciously. Justice Lifu added that justice would be met in the case of the plaintiffs only when the side of the defendant is heard on […]

Fierce lobbying, tension as APC primaries begin

Intense lobbying and growing tension have greeted the All Progressives Congress’ nationwide primaries as the ruling party begins the process of selecting its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The primaries, which kicked off with House of Representatives contests, have already exposed fresh cracks in several state chapters. In many states, aspirants and their supporters are said to be locked in last-minute meetings with governors, ministers and other power brokers in a bid to secure party tickets. Reports indicate that hotel lobbies in Abuja and major state capitals are now packed with politicians seeking endorsements, funding and favourable word from key stakeholders. Consensus talks reportedly collapsed in a number of states on Thursday night after rival camps rejected attempts by party leaders to impose “unity candidates”. In some areas, aggrieved aspirants have threatened legal action or defection if they […]

More criticism trails Makinde over Wetie comment

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is facing growing criticism over his recent reference to Operation Wetie, a violent episode in the political history of the old Western Region. The governor reportedly used the expression during a political gathering in Ibadan at the weekend, a remark that many now see as irresponsible and dangerous. Opposition figures, civil society groups and concerned citizens have condemned the statement, warning that such language could encourage political thuggery and undermine peace in the state. They argue that referencing a period associated with arson, killings and severe unrest sends the wrong signal ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Some critics insist that leaders must promote calm and constructive engagement instead of inflammatory rhetoric. They stress that Oyo State has enjoyed relative stability in recent years and should not return to a climate of fear or politically motivated attacks. Political […]

IPAC urges INEC to be cautious on ADC crisis, voter plan

The Inter Party Advisory Council has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to act with caution in handling the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress and its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise. IPAC said recent steps taken by the commission risk deepening tension and raising doubts about its neutrality ahead of the 2027 elections. IPAC expressed concern over INEC’s decision to freeze recognition of the Senator David Mark led National Working Committee of the ADC while court cases on the party’s leadership are still pending. It noted that even where internal leadership is being contested, this does not mean there is a vacuum, and warned that removing names of party leaders from INEC’s portal at this stage appears premature. The council warned that such actions could set a troubling precedent and create avoidable instability in the party system if […]

Amupitan warns ADC against convention without INEC

Legal scholar and INEC chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, has warned the African Democratic Congress against going ahead with any national convention that is not monitored by the electoral commission. He said such a move would have serious legal consequences and could invalidate decisions taken at the gathering. His warning follows the commission’s recent decision to suspend recognition of all factions of the ADC’s national leadership, pending the outcome of court cases over the party’s chairmanship and National Working Committee. INEC had earlier announced that it would not monitor any meeting, congress or convention convened on behalf of the ADC until the Federal High Court in Abuja delivers its judgment. Amupitan explained that the Electoral Act requires INEC to monitor party congresses and conventions that elect or remove national officers, approve constitutions or amend party rules. Holding such events without INEC’s […]

Coalition condemns Sowore, backs Umahi on debt dispute

A coalition of civil society organisations has criticised activist Omoyele Sowore over his recent public confrontation with Minister of Works David Umahi, describing it as mere theatrics. The group defended Umahi over allegations by Tracy Ohiri, who claims the minister owes her money for campaign materials and used the police to intimidate her. Members of the coalition said Sowore’s viral engagement with Umahi on the issue was a calculated attempt to dramatise an ongoing legal matter and mislead the public. They argued that Sowore’s style of activism focuses on spectacle rather than facts and due process and urged Nigerians to be cautious about drawing conclusions from social media clips. The coalition maintained that the police acted on a formal petition and within their constitutional powers, not on the instructions of Umahi for any personal vendetta. They also claimed that Ohiri’s […]
