FG orders seizure of passports from ex Nigerians

The Federal Government has ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service to immediately withdraw and deactivate passports held by Nigerians who have formally renounced their citizenship. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji Ojo gave the directive to the NIS, targeting people whose renunciation requests have already been approved by the President. This means they can no longer legally hold or use Nigerian passports once the process is completed. His media aide Alao Babatunde said the order is based on Section 29 subsections 1 and 2 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which states that any Nigerian of full age can renounce citizenship by making a formal declaration, and that the person ceases to be a citizen once the President registers that declaration. Immigration boss condemns border extortion allegations

The Nigeria Immigration Service has condemned allegations of extortion against its personnel along the Lagos Seme border corridor and taken disciplinary action against senior officers. Comptroller General of Immigration Kemi Nanna Nandap ordered an investigation into the alleged misconduct, describing the behaviour shown in videos and reports as unacceptable and a clear breach of the Service’s core values and standards. In a statement signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS announced that the Controllers in charge of the affected commands have been temporarily relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the probe. Marwa urges stronger intelligence sharing to fight insecurity

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Buba Marwa has called for closing key intelligence gaps as a central step in tackling Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. He spoke at the Army War College Nigeria Interagency Seminar in Abuja, where he warned that the country faces a complex mix of threats, including insurgency and terrorism in the North East, farmer herder clashes in the North West and North Central, secessionist agitations in the South East, and organised crime and drug trafficking in the South South and South West. Immigration Raises Passport Fees to ₦100k and ₦200k

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a fresh increase in the cost of obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, effective September 1, 2025. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the new charges will only apply to applications made within Nigeria. Under the revised structure, a 32-page passport with five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, while a 64-page passport with 10-year validity will cost ₦200,000. The NIS clarified that passport fees for Nigerians abroad remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page, five-year booklet and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year booklet.
