Insecurity: US Panel Accuses Police, Army of Collusion in Militias’ Attacks

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has accused members of Nigeria’s police and army of colluding with Fulani militias in attacks on communities across the country. In a report released yesterday, the US panel alleged that some security officials were allegedly linked to incidents involving kidnappings and violent attacks targeting civilians, particularly in the central and northern regions. The report stated that multiple and overlapping factors, including religion in many cases, likely spur Fulani militants to attack communities or individuals. The USCIRF report follows earlier allegations that 30,000 armed Fulani militants are driving Nigeria’s insecurity. The panel’s findings have intensified scrutiny of the Nigerian security sector, already under pressure due to rising kidnappings, banditry, and communal clashes across the country. According to the report, security forces have made gains against insurgents, but the military is overstretched, handling […]

Rubio Calls Cuba a Security Threat

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described Cuba as a “national security threat” to the United States, warning that the chances of reaching a peaceful agreement with the Cuban government remain low. His remarks came one day after US authorities announced criminal charges against former Cuban president Raúl Castro over the 1996 shooting down of two civilian aircraft linked to the Cuban-American group Brothers to the Rescue. The incident killed four people, including three American citizens. Speaking to reporters, Rubio said Washington still preferred a diplomatic solution but stressed that President Donald Trump had a responsibility to protect the country against any potential threat. Rubio also accused Cuba of supporting terrorism in the region, claims strongly rejected by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla. Cuban authorities described the accusations as false and politically motivated, insisting the island has never […]

US soldier charged over Maduro insider betting

A US special forces soldier has been arrested after allegedly using classified military information to profit from bets placed before the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro became public. According to the US Department of Justice, the soldier, identified as Gannon Ken Van Dyke, is accused of placing a series of trades on a prediction platform while directly involved in planning the operation that led to Maduro’s arrest in January. Prosecutors say he used sensitive, nonpublic information to anticipate the outcome and timing of the mission. Investigators allege that Van Dyke created an account in late December 2025 and placed multiple transactions linked to political developments in Venezuela. In total, he reportedly invested more than $33,000 and generated profits exceeding $400,000 once the operation was carried out. Ex-NATO chief says UK ‘not safe’

Former NATO secretary general George Robertson has warned that Britain’s national security is “in peril”, declaring that the UK is “not safe” under current defence arrangements. In extracts of a speech reported by the Financial Times and BBC, Robertson accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government of “corrosive complacency” on defence. He said the Iran war should serve as a “rude wake‑up call” to the risks the UK faces. “We are underprepared. We are underinsured. We are under attack. We are not safe,” the former Labour defence secretary was quoted as saying. Robertson led a government‑commissioned review of Britain’s defence capabilities, published last year, and was expecting ministers to follow it with a 10‑year defence investment plan. That plan was meant to be released late last year but has yet to appear. He told the Financial Times there was a gap […]

Police dismiss viral Abuja terror alert arrest video maker

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral video claiming there was an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja, describing it as false and aimed at causing panic. Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid said no such incident took place in the Federal Capital Territory and warned that the video was entirely misleading and malicious. He explained that preliminary investigations showed the clip was edited from different online footage to create a fake terror alert designed to incite fear and undermine confidence in security in the nation’s capital. Police operatives have arrested one Pam Joseph in connection with producing and circulating the video, following credible intelligence and digital forensic investigations that linked him to the content. Placid stressed that while citizens have the right to free expression, that right does not cover deliberate misinformation that can threaten public peace and […]

Marwa urges stronger intelligence sharing to fight insecurity

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Buba Marwa has called for closing key intelligence gaps as a central step in tackling Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. He spoke at the Army War College Nigeria Interagency Seminar in Abuja, where he warned that the country faces a complex mix of threats, including insurgency and terrorism in the North East, farmer herder clashes in the North West and North Central, secessionist agitations in the South East, and organised crime and drug trafficking in the South South and South West. Marwa said criminals are becoming more sophisticated, using technology, government systems and cross border networks, and insisted that security can no longer be seen as only a military or police issue. He called for a whole of government and whole of society approach that brings together all security agencies and the public. He […]

Troops kill terrorists, stop kidnappings in fresh raids

Nigerian troops have stepped up operations across several theatres, killing terrorists, foiling kidnap attempts and rescuing victims in different parts of the country. According to military authorities, the coordinated raids targeted armed groups involved in terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. In the North East, troops under Operation Hadin Kai engaged Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in a series of clashes, neutralising several terrorists and destroying their hideouts. Soldiers also rescued civilians who had been targeted for abduction during these operations. Along the Buratai–Kamuya axis, troops escorting civilians came under attack but quickly received reinforcement from a quick reaction force. The combined team repelled the terrorists, forcing them to abandon an attempted mass kidnapping involving more than 150 men, women and children. In other regions, including the North West and North Central, troops conducted clearance operations against bandits and other criminal gangs. […]
