US soldier charged over Maduro insider betting

A US special forces soldier has been arrested after allegedly using classified military information to profit from bets placed before the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro became public. According to the US Department of Justice, the soldier, identified as Gannon Ken Van Dyke, is accused of placing a series of trades on a prediction platform while directly involved in planning the operation that led to Maduro’s arrest in January. Prosecutors say he used sensitive, nonpublic information to anticipate the outcome and timing of the mission. Investigators allege that Van Dyke created an account in late December 2025 and placed multiple transactions linked to political developments in Venezuela. In total, he reportedly invested more than $33,000 and generated profits exceeding $400,000 once the operation was carried out. The military operation, carried out overnight on 3 January, resulted in Maduro and […]

Ex-NATO chief says UK ‘not safe’

Former NATO secretary general George Robertson has warned that Britain’s national security is “in peril”, declaring that the UK is “not safe” under current defence arrangements. In extracts of a speech reported by the Financial Times and BBC, Robertson accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government of “corrosive complacency” on defence. He said the Iran war should serve as a “rude wake‑up call” to the risks the UK faces. “We are underprepared. We are underinsured. We are under attack. We are not safe,” the former Labour defence secretary was quoted as saying. Robertson led a government‑commissioned review of Britain’s defence capabilities, published last year, and was expecting ministers to follow it with a 10‑year defence investment plan. That plan was meant to be released late last year but has yet to appear. He told the Financial Times there was a gap […]

Police dismiss viral Abuja terror alert arrest video maker

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral video claiming there was an ongoing terrorist attack in Abuja, describing it as false and aimed at causing panic. Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid said no such incident took place in the Federal Capital Territory and warned that the video was entirely misleading and malicious. He explained that preliminary investigations showed the clip was edited from different online footage to create a fake terror alert designed to incite fear and undermine confidence in security in the nation’s capital. Police operatives have arrested one Pam Joseph in connection with producing and circulating the video, following credible intelligence and digital forensic investigations that linked him to the content. Placid stressed that while citizens have the right to free expression, that right does not cover deliberate misinformation that can threaten public peace and […]

He spoke at the Army War College Nigeria Interagency Seminar in Abuja, where he warned that the country faces a complex mix of threats, including insurgency and terrorism in the North East, farmer herder clashes in the North West and North Central, secessionist agitations in the South East, and organised crime and drug trafficking in the South South and South West. Marwa said criminals are becoming more sophisticated, using technology, government systems and cross border networks, and insisted that security can no longer be seen as only a military or police issue. He called for a whole of government and whole of society approach that brings together all security agencies and the public. He […]
