The Ministry of Defence, the National Security Adviser (NSA), and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have called for a stronger media-security partnership to help tackle Nigeria’s growing security challenges and counter misinformation.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu tasked defence and security spokespersons to proactively engage Nigerians and build public trust, stressing that clearer communication will improve citizens’ confidence in the military and security agencies.
The Ministry of Defence, under Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has emphasized the need for a unified and integrated approach to intelligence gathering and operations, particularly in the face of asymmetric warfare.
Musa said agencies have been operating in isolation for too long and must now come together to harness collective intelligence and work as a unified team to support troops and safeguard the nation.
The NUJ leadership has welcomed structured engagements, including regular press briefings and interface sessions, arguing that consistent communication will enable citizens to better understand reforms and innovations in security operations.
The union has proposed quarterly ministerial press briefings and collaboration in capacity development, with a focus on equipping journalists with a deeper understanding of security reporting, national interest and responsible information dissemination.
Earlier media-security seminars have stressed that the military and media are strategic partners whose collaboration is critical in countering misinformation, building public trust and promoting national unity.
The seminars have advocated structured communication, conflict-sensitive reporting, joint workshops and the highest ethical standards in information dissemination, especially in the digital age where fake news spreads rapidly.

Ghana pushes for concrete slavery reparations after UN slavery vote
Ghana is ramping up its push for concrete slavery reparations after successfully spearheading a landmark United Nations resolution recognising the transatlantic slave trade as one of history’s gravest crimes against humanity. In March 2026, Ghana led 123 UN member states to adopt a resolution that declared the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity and described calls for reparations as a “concrete step towards remedy” for historical wrongs. The resolution urges formal apologies from states and institutions that profited from slavery, as well as discussions on reparations that could include direct financial compensation, development support and the return of looted African cultural property. Building on the UN vote, Ghana will host a major global conference on reparatory justice in Accra from June 17 to 19, aimed at “charting the next phase of the global reparations agenda” and turning broad […]

FG to evacuate over 742 Nigerians from South Africa before June 30
The Federal Government has announced plans to evacuate over 742 Nigerians from South Africa before June 30, following renewed xenophobic attacks and rising anti-migrant sentiment in parts of the country. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the evacuation exercise is already underway, with the first batch of 258 Nigerians successfully airlifted from South Africa to Lagos as part of the voluntary repatriation scheme. The move comes amid reports of fresh attacks and threats against foreign nationals, with activists in South Africa issuing a June 30 deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country, prompting Nigeria to accelerate its evacuation plans. The government earlier approved at least five evacuation flights, operated by Air Peace, after more than 500 Nigerians were screened and cleared to return home, with the screening window extended to accommodate more applicants. Officials say about 1,000 Nigerians […]

Relief for ADC, AP as Appeal Court stops deregistration order
Several opposition political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Accord Party (AP), have secured temporary relief after the Court of Appeal halted the enforcement of a Federal High Court judgment ordering their deregistration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Earlier in the week, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for failing to meet the constitutional thresholds required to remain on the register of political parties. The trial court held that the parties breached Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers INEC to deregister political parties that fail to win any elective seat or secure at least 25 per cent of the votes in relevant elections at federal, state or local government […]

Abdulsalami: I told Obasanjo not to contest 1999 presidency
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has disclosed that he advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to contest the 1999 presidential election after Obasanjo's release from detention in 1998. When Obasanjo came to see Abdulsalami after his release, Abdulsalami advised him point-blank to abandon the idea of contesting the presidential race. Abdulsalami told him to go home, thank God he was still alive after four years of detention, and forget about becoming President. During the same meeting, Abdulsalami also talked Obasanjo out of filing a lawsuit against the Federal Government over his wrongful imprisonment, warning him that court processes are uncertain. Instead, Abdulsalami offered to explore compensation for the collapse of Obasanjo's business during his years in detention, and Obasanjo agreed not to pursue litigation. Abdulsalami described the encounter as forthright, stating that Obasanjo agreed to think about […]

UN: Africa urgently needs more fish farms to meet rising demand
The United Nations has urged Africa to urgently invest in more fish farms to meet rising demand for aquatic foods, especially as population growth and urbanization continue to increase the need for fish across the continent. According to UN sources, demand for fish is rising due to greater awareness of the health benefits of fish, alongside pressure from declining natural fish stocks and warmer water temperatures that are reducing wild catches. The push for aquaculture development is part of a broader strategy to improve food security and support sustainable economic growth in African countries. Experts say that without expanded fish farming, Africa could face growing supply gaps as wild fisheries become less able to meet consumer needs.
