SSANU rejects fake 30 percent deal issues strike ultimatum

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has dismissed claims that it has reached a wage agreement with the Federal Government and has reaffirmed its threat to begin an indefinite strike from April 30 if talks are not concluded. In a communiqué issued after a Special National Executive Council meeting held on April 18 in Abuja, the union said renegotiation of its agreement with government is still ongoing despite seven meetings since October 2024. It condemned a letter circulating in public that suggested the president had approved a 30 percent increase in allowances as misleading and a violation of collective bargaining. The communiqué signed by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim warned that the union will not accept any outcome below what has been mutually discussed during the renegotiation process. It insisted that fairness, due process and respect for collective bargaining principles […]

NASU accuses govt of neglecting workers welfare

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has accused the Federal Government of playing politics with the welfare of Nigerian workers. The union said officials often provoke strikes through neglect and insincerity, only to punish workers for exercising their rights. Speaking at the opening of NASU’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, criticised the government’s frequent threats to apply the “No Work, No Pay” policy. He described the move as a deliberate attempt to intimidate workers and criminalise legitimate union activities. Adeyemi said such behaviour exposes the government’s double standards and undermines industrial peace and workers’ confidence. He explained that unions only embark on strikes after the government repeatedly fails to honour agreements and ignores collective bargaining processes. “Union leaders are not irrational individuals who declare strikes for fun. Strikes are […]

SSANU, NASU extend strike ultimatum by two weeks

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have extended their strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by two weeks. The two unions, under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum over unresolved welfare issues, including the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances” and non-payment of outstanding benefits. In a fresh letter addressed to their chapters on Tuesday, SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim said the decision followed a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19, 2025. According to the letter, the government set up a joint consultative committee to address the unions’ demands, with representatives from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Labour in attendance. However, the unions noted that despite the […]

SSANU, NASU give FG 7-day strike notice over unpaid allowances

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved welfare issues, warning of a nationwide strike. In a joint letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions decried the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances, non-payment of outstanding salaries and arrears, and stalled renegotiation of agreements.” The letter recalled that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU had earlier written to the government on June 18, 2025, highlighting unresolved matters. That letter led to a meeting with the Minister on July 4. According to the unions, discussions centred on: the skewed N50bn earned allowances distribution, non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries, arrears of 25/35% salary increments, and the delayed renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement. While a […]
