Resident doctors to begin indefinite nationwide strike Tuesday

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has declared an indefinite nationwide strike to begin at 12 00 a m on Tuesday April 7 2026. The decision followed an extraordinary NEC meeting where the body reviewed government’s handling of its long standing demands. NARD said the action became inevitable after repeated failures by the Federal Government to honour agreements and implement terms reached in earlier negotiations. The doctors accused authorities of making promises on paper without translating them into concrete improvements on the ground. Key issues listed include unpaid salary and promotion arrears for many members across teaching and specialist hospitals. The association is also demanding improved working conditions, implementation of agreed allowances and adequate staffing to reduce excessive workload. NARD faults FG’s claims on doctors’ welfare, says “facts must replace fiction”

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has faulted the recent statement by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare titled “FG Reaffirms Commitment to Doctors’ Welfare and Industrial Harmony in the Health Sector,” describing it as misleading and disconnected from the realities faced by medical professionals across Nigeria. In a rejoinder issued on Monday, NARD accused the ministry of presenting an “optimistic narrative” that obscures the true challenges confronting doctors. “We do not intend to join issues with the Ministry, but for the sake of transparency, truth, and the health of Nigerians, it is imperative to set the records straight, particularly for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who may have been misinformed about the true nature of our grievances,” the association said. According to NARD, the union has 19 outstanding demands repeatedly presented to the Federal Government. It described […]

Resident Doctors Suspend Strike, Give FG Fresh 2-Week Ultimatum

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has resumed work after suspending its two-day strike but warned the Federal Government that it has only two weeks to meet outstanding demands or face renewed industrial action. The strike, which began on Friday, paralysed activities across public hospitals, forcing consultants and other health workers to manage overwhelming caseloads while patients endured long delays. In a statement on Saturday, NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, confirmed the decision: “Some of our demands have been met. The government has promised to look into other issues. Strike suspended; resumption of work tomorrow (today). We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities.” The association explained that the suspension followed government assurances and the commencement of payments for the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to […]
