81-year-old Museveni sworn in for seventh term as Uganda’s president

Uganda’s long-serving leader, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has been sworn in for a seventh term in office at a ceremony held in the capital, Kampala. The 81-year-old, who has ruled the East African country since 1986, took the oath of office at the Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds on Tuesday, extending his time in power to more than four decades. The poll was marred by reports of violence, arrests of opposition supporters and an internet shutdown, drawing criticism from rights groups and international observers. The inauguration was attended by several African heads of state and foreign dignitaries, with Uganda’s government saying at least 35 leaders had been invited for the high-profile event. Uganda opposition leader Bobi Wine ‘escapes’ house arrest

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine says he escaped a night‑time raid on his home by police and army personnel, hours after rejecting early election results that show President Yoweri Museveni heading for another term in office. In a post on X, the former pop star, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said security forces stormed his residence, cut power and disabled some CCTV cameras before he managed to flee. Wine said he is now in an undisclosed location while his wife and family remain effectively under house arrest, surrounded by soldiers and police. Ugandan authorities have denied abducting him, with a police spokesman insisting he is “at home” and “not under arrest,” despite his party alleging an army helicopter had earlier landed in his compound and taken him away. The opposition figure has accused the government of massive vote‑rigging in […]
