Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s bid to leave Sokoto prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu seeking to be moved from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a custodial facility closer to Abuja. Kanu had asked to be transferred to Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory or Keffi Custodial Centre in Nasarawa State.​ He made the request through the Legal Aid Council in an ex parte application, arguing that a transfer would help him effectively pursue his appeal. A Federal High Court in Abuja has warned detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu that he could lose his right to defend himself if he fails to open his case at the next hearing. Justice James Omotosho issued the warning on Tuesday after Kanu again refused to enter his defence in his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism. This marks the fourth time he has failed to do so since the prosecution closed its case and the court dismissed his no-case submission.
