DSS Tells Court: IPOB/ESN Killed Up to 200 Security Agents
The Federal High Court in Abuja , presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has heard claims that up to 200 security agents have been killed in the South-East due to attacks by IPOB and its alleged armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) .
This was revealed by a Department of State Services (DSS) official , who testified as the fourth prosecution witness in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu , the detained leader of IPOB.
He said investigations showed that some ESN members claimed they were ordered by Kanu to kill security operatives and even bury a deceased ESN member, Ikonso , with 2,000 human heads —though only 30 were sourced .
No Licence For Radio Biafra – NBC Confirms
The court also heard that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) never issued a licence for Radio Biafra or for the operation of the German-made radio transmitter allegedly smuggled into the country by Kanu.
A certified copy of an NBC report was presented in court. It confirmed the device was a professional FM transmitter but had been imported and stored without legal clearance .
The DSS witness said the equipment was kept at a location in Anambra State , owned by one Benjamin Madubugu , and later inspected by Kanu himself.
“Kanu made a video showing the transmitter to his supporters, who funded its purchase,” he told the court.
Gulak Killing Detailed in Court
The witness also gave details about the 2021 killing of Barrister Ahmed Gulak , former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, in Owerri, Imo State .
He said Gulak was in a cab heading to the airport when the driver took a detour after being blocked by Nigerian Air Force officers.
That’s when the vehicle ran into an IPOB checkpoint .
One of the IPOB members reportedly asked Gulak to speak Igbo to prove he was from the region.
“He couldn’t speak it well. When they removed his cap, they saw a Muslim prayer mark.”
“They said ‘he is one of them,’ and shot him dead.”
Security forces recovered the body later that day.
ESN Operated Like Militants – DSS Reveals
According to the DSS official:
- ESN members are armed combatants
- They attack homes of politicians and traditional leaders
- They sometimes set up roadblocks and hijack vehicles for their operations
During a raid on an ESN hideout, DSS agents found seven men with human heads , which they used for spiritual protection rituals.
“Some of them were even eating human flesh,” the witness added.
However, the DSS could not confirm all reported activities because some suspects had escaped police custody before interrogation.
Kanu’s Trial Continues
Under cross-examination by Kanu’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) , the witness admitted he did not know exactly when the transmitter was brought into the country.
He also said he was unaware of certain names and companies linked to the importation process.
When asked about reports that Radio Biafra was registered in London , the witness said Kanu was arrested in Lagos in 2016 with broadcasting equipment, though he wasn’t present during that arrest.
Weapons recovered from the premises were found under a mattress—not inside the container with the transmitter.
Court Adjourns for Next Witness
At the end of the session, the court discharged the fourth prosecution witness and adjourned until Thursday for the fifth witness to be called.
Justice Omotosho presided over the hearing as part of the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, who faces charges related to terrorism, arms possession, and unlawful broadcasts.
