The first batch of United States military personnel has arrived in Nigeria to support new joint operations against terrorist groups in the country’s north. Officials say the deployment will focus on intelligence, training and advisory support for Nigerian forces rather than direct combat. Around 200 American troops are expected to take part in the mission, with the initial wave of about 100 soldiers landing in Maiduguri, Borno State. Their arrival followed the landing of US military aircraft in the northeast, delivering equipment and ammunition for upcoming counter terrorism operations. The mission includes intelligence gathering, surveillance support and help with planning complex operations that combine air power and ground troops. The deployment is part […]

Fresh killings and abductions deepen security fears in Nigeria

Fresh killings, kidnappings and violent clashes in parts of Nigeria have heightened public fear over security as new intelligence reports warn that terrorist groups are stepping up drone attacks. President Bola Tinubu has again pledged to strengthen the country’s security architecture, saying that defeating terrorism is key to economic stability and national development. In Kogi State, residents of Ejule community in Ofu Local Council raised alarm over the abduction of passengers travelling in a commercial Sienna bus along the Ejule Aloma road. Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers reportedly intercepted the vehicle heading towards Abuja, seized about 10 passengers and abandoned the bus, while security agencies had yet to issue an official statement at press time. The same area also witnessed deadly clashes between armed Fulani men and residents of Ibaji communities, including Ejule Ojebe, where at least four people were […]

ISWAP second in command killed as military steps up Sambisa offensive

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have killed Abu Khalid, the reported second in command of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), during a major night offensive in the Sambisa Forest area of Borno State. The operation, launched around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Komala general area of Konduga Local Government Area, also resulted in the elimination of at least 10 other fighters linked to the terror group. A military source described Abu Khalid as a key figure in the insurgent hierarchy, responsible for coordinating operations and logistics across the Sambisa axis. The latest success came less than 24 hours after troops neutralised another top ISWAP commander, Julaibib, during a fierce battle around Kimba in Damboa Local Government Area. The back to back blows are seen as a significant disruption of the group’s command structure in the North East. […]

ISWAP attacks: Court exonerates DSS over terror suspect’s whereabouts

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has exonerated the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that it secretly detained and killed alleged ISWAP leader in Kogi, Yusuf Lukman Omeiza, who was linked to a series of terror attacks. The suit was filed by Omeiza’s relatives, Jimoh Yusuf and Fati Mohammed, who sought declarations that his alleged arrest, detention and killing without trial violated his right to life and demanded 10 billion naira in damages from the DSS and the Attorney General of the Federation. Lawyers to the plaintiffs relied largely on claims that the suspect had disappeared after his 2015 arrest in Okene, insisting that security agents must be held responsible. However, the DSS, through its counsel, argued that the allegation of extra‑judicial killing was based on hearsay and tendered documents to show that Omeiza was transferred to […]
