Trump orders US Navy to destroy boats laying mines in Hormuz

President Donald Trump on Thursday ordered the United States Navy to destroy any boats found laying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating pressure on Iran over control of the vital waterway. “I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be… that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote in a post cited by U.S. media. He added that there should be “no hesitation” in carrying out the directive. Trump also said U.S. mine‑sweeping operations were already under way. “Additionally, our mine ‘sweepers’ are clearing the Strait right now,” he stated, underscoring Washington’s determination to keep the strategic chokepoint open to international shipping. The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Gulf to global markets, is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, […]

UK boosts Middle East defence presence

The United Kingdom is reinforcing its military presence in the Middle East, deploying additional troops and advanced air defence systems in response to escalating threats linked to Iran. Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that the total number of UK personnel involved in regional defence operations—including in the Gulf and Cyprus—will rise to around 1,000. The deployments will focus on strengthening defensive capabilities in key allied states such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait. Expanded air defence and military assets As part of the reinforcement, the UK will deploy additional air defence teams and systems, including the Sky Sabre missile defence system to Saudi Arabia. This system is designed to intercept incoming missiles and aircraft and will be integrated into regional defence networks. Other systems already deployed include the Lightweight Multirole Missile launcher in Bahrain and the Rapid Sentry air defence […]

Oil prices plunge as Trump pauses Iran energy strikes

Oil prices fell sharply on Monday while European stock markets rebounded after United States President Donald Trump suddenly ordered a halt to planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. His comments on Truth Social marked a sharp shift from his earlier threats over the weekend. Brent crude futures at one point dropped more than 14 percent before trimming losses to trade down about nine percent. West Texas Intermediate crude also slid, and European gas prices fell by around four percent as traders reacted to the pause in military action. Analysts said markets now need more clarity because Iran has publicly denied that any talks with the United States have taken place. That denial partly cooled the initial relief rally and reminded investors that tensions in the Middle East remain high. European stocks had opened the week with heavy losses but turned […]

UK foreign minister to meet Rubio over tensions at joint air base

Britain’s foreign minister Yvette Cooper will meet United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Friday amid rising tensions over their joint military base on Diego Garcia. The talks follow President Donald Trump’s renewed criticism of the UK’s decision to cede sovereignty over the surrounding Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Under a deal agreed last year by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Britain will transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands while keeping control of the Diego Garcia base through a 99 year lease that guarantees continued US military access. Washington initially backed the arrangement, but Trump has since repeatedly attacked it, calling the move a “big mistake” and warning London not to “give away Diego Garcia.” The dispute has sharpened as the US steps up military deployments around Iran and weighs possible strikes against its nuclear and military facilities. British […]

US clears multibillion dollar arms sales to Israel and Saudi Arabia

The United States has approved two major weapons deals worth billions of dollars for Israel and Saudi Arabia at a time of heightened tension with Iran. The State Department authorised a 3.8 billion dollar sale of 30 Apache attack helicopters to Israel, along with a 1.8 billion dollar package of joint light tactical vehicles. It said the deal would help Israel maintain a strong self defence capability and is consistent with long standing US commitments to its security. Washington already supplies Israel with billions of dollars in military aid each year. The latest approvals come as Israel observes a fragile US backed ceasefire in Gaza after more than two years of war with Hamas. The US has also approved a 9 billion dollar sale of 730 Patriot missiles to Saudi Arabia. The system is designed to defend against incoming aerial […]

Oil prices tumble after Trump eases concerns over Iran

Oil prices have fallen sharply after US President Donald Trump signalled he may hold off on military action against Iran, easing fears of a sudden disruption to global crude supplies. The pullback comes after a week in which benchmark prices surged on worries that Washington could strike Iran over its deadly crackdown on protesters. US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped by more than 1 to 2, losing over 1 per barrel in early Asian trading after Trump said killings in Iran were “stopping” and there was “no plan for executions.” Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell by around 3, slipping back below 65 per barrel after gaining about 11 over the previous five sessions. Trump told reporters the US would “watch it and see,” comments that traders interpreted as a sign that an immediate strike on Iran was unlikely. Analysts […]
