Court Vacates Arrest Warrant Against PDP Factional Chairman Kabiru Turaki

An Abuja High Court has vacated the bench warrant it earlier issued for the arrest of factional Peoples Democratic Party national chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN). The bench warrant had been granted after Turaki failed to appear for arraignment on a one count charge of allegedly giving false information to the police. The charge stems from a petition he wrote in 2022 as a private citizen, accusing certain persons of wrongdoing. The Inspector General of Police later filed a case against him, alleging that the information in the petition was false. Justice Peter Kekemeke had on March 25 ordered Turaki’s arrest, ruling that there was no justification for his absence in court. However, Turaki’s lawyers immediately appealed the order and filed an application for stay of execution, arguing that he missed the sitting due to a sudden hospital visit and […]

Court orders arrest of PDP factional chairman Turaki

An FCT High Court sitting in Maitama has ordered the arrest of factional Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. Justice Peter Kekemeke issued a bench warrant on Thursday after Turaki failed to appear in court for his arraignment on a criminal charge. Turaki is facing a one count charge filed by the Inspector General of Police accusing him of giving false information to the police. The alleged offence relates to a petition he wrote on October 5, 2022 against one Saidi Mohammed Mainasara, which prosecutors say was intended to misuse the IGP’s lawful powers to the injury or annoyance of Mainasara. When the case was called, prosecution counsel Usman Rabiu told the court that the matter was fixed for Turaki to take his plea. He said Turaki had been duly served with the charge and a hearing […]

IGP Egbetokun removed, to be replaced by Tunji Disu

President Donald Trump’s Nigerian counterpart, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police, paving the way for Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu to take over as the country’s new police chief. Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd IGP in June 2023, was reportedly directed to prepare his handover notes, with senior police and presidency sources confirming that a formal announcement and ceremony are being arranged. Sources quoted in multiple reports say Tinubu personally ordered Egbetokun’s exit amid growing controversies around his extended stay in office beyond normal retirement age, as well as internal discontent over his leadership style. Some officers described him as “power drunk” and linked his removal partly to health concerns, claiming the president wants him to focus on treatment for reported kidney related medical issues. Egbetokun’s tenure was dogged by scandals, including […]
