Police fire tear gas at Lagos residents protesting Makoko demolitions

There was tension in Lagos on Tuesday as police fired tear gas at residents protesting the demolition of homes in the Makoko waterfront community and other parts of the state. Members of the Makoko community, alongside activists and sympathisers, had gathered to condemn ongoing demolitions and forced evictions they say are displacing thousands of people, including women and children. The protesters marched with placards, chanting against what they described as inhumane and unlawful demolitions, and calling on the Lagos State Government to halt the exercise. Military should have apologised after denying coup plot – Falana

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has faulted the Nigerian military for failing to apologise to citizens after initially denying any coup plot, only to later confirm that some officers would face trial over an alleged scheme to overthrow the government. Ugandan president’s son issues death threat to Bobi Wine

Confusion has trailed reports that 172 worshippers who is also President Yoweri Museveni’s son, has publicly said he wants opposition leader Bobi Wine dead. His remarks came days after Wine claimed he had gone into hiding following a police raid on his home.​ Kainerugaba made the threats in posts on X after Museveni secured an eighth term in last Thursday’s election, which observers and rights groups heavily criticised. Death toll from Iran unrest nears 2,600, rights group reports

The death toll from weeks of anti government unrest in Iran has climbed to almost 2,600 people, according to a US based human rights group. HRANA said it has so far verified the deaths of 2,403 protesters and 147 members of the security forces and other government affiliated individuals.​ An Iranian official separately told Reuters that about 2,000 people had been killed, marking the first time a figure in that range has been acknowledged by someone inside the system. Families doubt Venezuela’s prisoner release pledge

The son of an imprisoned Venezuelan opposition figure has urged former US President Donald Trump to remain firm on Caracas, warning that the government has not honoured its pledge to free large numbers of political detainees.
