Ugandan president’s son issues death threat to Bobi Wine

Article arrow_drop_down

Confusion has trailed reports that 172 worshippers who is also President Yoweri Museveni’s son, has publicly said he wants opposition leader Bobi Wine dead. His remarks came days after Wine claimed he had gone into hiding following a police raid on his home.

Kainerugaba made the threats in posts on X after Museveni secured an eighth term in last Thursday’s election, which observers and rights groups heavily criticised. The opposition led by 43 year old Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, alleges widespread violence and intimidation before the vote.

In one post, Kainerugaba wrote that security forces had killed 22 National Unity Platform “terrorists” in the past week and added that he was praying Bobi Wine would be the 23rd. In another message he gave Wine 48 hours to surrender to the police or be treated as an outlaw or rebel.

Wine’s location remains unknown after he said he escaped from his home while his wife was left under what he described as house arrest. He accused Kainerugaba of issuing threats to kill him and demanded that the military withdraw from his compound, saying his family was not safe.

Kainerugaba also used X to insult Wine, calling himself “a prophet of Almighty God” and mocking the opposition leader’s appearance in racist terms. He is known for controversial social media posts and had previously threatened to behead Wine.

The incident has heightened concern about political repression in Uganda, where Wine was arrested and allegedly tortured ahead of the 2021 election in which he first ran against Museveni. Since Museveni’s latest victory, Kainerugaba has resumed frequent late night posting after staying unusually quiet online during the campaign.

Top commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, have surrendered to Nigerian troops alongside 76 fighters and their family members in the North-East. The surrender reportedly followed weeks of sustained air and ground offensives by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, which the military said had weakened the group’s command structure, logistics network and movement corridors. According to military authorities, the development marks a major setback for the insurgent group and reflects growing pressure inside its ranks. The surrendered commanders are being profiled and debriefed for intelligence purposes.
