Road Safety Authority gives Assemblies 21 days to remove unauthorised billboards in Accra

The Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Mr Abraham Amaliba, has given municipal and district assemblies in the Greater Accra region a 21-day ultimatum to remove unauthorised billboards that pose risks to motorists and pedestrians. Mr Amaliba issued the directive during an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, April 30, citing the increasing number of unregulated billboards—particularly those erected on road medians and near intersections—as a serious safety concern. According to him, many of these structures obstruct drivers’ views and serve as dangerous distractions. “I have written to the municipal and district assemblies in the Greater Accra Region. They are the ones who license these advertising companies and allow the erection of these billboards. So they should remove them,” he said. He cited specific locations, such as Boundary Road in East Legon and parts of the Ring […]

Boakye Agyarko warns NPP ‘Thank You’ Tour is fuelling division

A former flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, has raised concerns over the party’s ongoing ‘Thank You’ Tour, describing it as a mission that has veered dangerously off course and is now threatening the unity and public image of the party. In a statement issued on April 28, 2025, Mr Agyarko criticised the current form of the tour, which he said was initially designed to reconnect with grassroots supporters, renew party spirit, and project a united front following the party’s internal flagbearer contest. Instead, he lamented that the exercise has degenerated into internal wrangling, blame-shifting, and rising tension among party ranks. “What was intended to restore our party’s shine and reconnect us with the grassroots is instead unravelling into bouts of discord, blame-shifting, and internal strife,” he stated. “This regrettable turn of events threatens to inflict […]

Staff shortage blamed for rising indiscipline at Accra Academy

According to the school’s headmaster, Mr Emmanuel Ofoe Fiemawhle, only 22 staff members currently reside on the school premises, overseeing a student population of nearly 5,000 boarders. Mr Fiemawhle raised these concerns during a visit by the Education Committee of Parliament to the school, where he described the staffing situation as inadequate for proper supervision. He noted that the limited number of resident staff, including hall masters and other auxiliary workers, makes it extremely difficult to maintain order and discipline among students in the boarding house.“We have 22 of our staff who serve as hall masters and other auxiliary workers. So, it is difficult to manage the students as boarders,” he told members of the committee. “If you want to look at the sources for indiscipline, it is because the numbers are not enough to manage the students as boarders.” […]

It has consequently called on prescribers of laboratory requests of the hospital, made up of doctors and nurses, not to refer laboratory diagnostic cases to private laboratories around the hospital. It said that even if there was the need for referral of any laboratory diagnostic cases, such referral must come from the central lab, rather than the medical staff.“Let the cases come to us, and then we will refer. Our laboratory is ready to take care of the hospital’s patients. Transforming the services and restoring trust in medical laboratory services in the KBTH is a collective responsibility of all of us. “I call on all of us to rededicate ourselves to the advocacy to fight against the high speed or tendency of referring laboratory diagnostic cases to private laboratories around us. Ghana Chief Justice Suspension: Nation Grapples with Separation of Powers

The suspension of the chief justice of the supreme court of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, and the investigation ordered by Ghana's president, John Mahama, over allegations of abuse of office is throwing up a big constitutional puzzle and political headache for the west African country. It has provoked deep questions about the balance of power, the independence of the judiciary and the integrity of the country's democratic leadership. The President's Action and Constitutional Grounds Supporters of President Mahama argue three anonymous petitions of corruption and suspected impropriety justify his decision. However, critics argue President Mahama's course of action undermines Article 146 of Ghana's 1992 Constitution. This article explains the procedure to impeach a Chief Justice "on the ground of proven misbehaviour or incapacity" (i.e., for incompetence or for misbehaviour). Here is the constitution, which is a cornerstone of the […]
