Algeria moves to label French colonisation a ‘state crime’ and seek reparations

Algeria’s parliament has advanced a landmark bill that would formally declare France’s 130 year colonisation of the country a “state crime” and hold it responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between 1830 and 1962. Lawmakers are voting on the legislation amid a wider diplomatic rift with Paris, with supporters calling the move a historic step in the country’s quest for colonial justice. The draft law seeks to criminalise France’s colonial rule, classifying atrocities committed during the occupation as crimes against humanity under international law. It also makes the “glorification” of French colonialism in Algeria an offence, signalling a tougher stance on how the period is remembered and discussed in public life. According to texts seen by local and international media, the bill states that France bears legal responsibility for its colonial past in Algeria and for the […]

Élysée Staffer Faces Trial Over Stolen Tableware

A senior employee at France’s presidential palace is set to face trial over allegations that valuable tableware was stolen from the Élysée’s official collections. Investigators say nearly 100 items reported missing, including Baccarat champagne flutes, Sèvres porcelain plates, solid silver cutlery and a René Lalique figurine, were later discovered in the locker, vehicle and home of Thomas M, identified by French media as the palace’s chief butler. He will appear in court alongside two other defendants. Prosecutors estimate the value of the items at between €15,000 and €40,000. Some of the objects were allegedly found listed for sale on Thomas M’s account on the online marketplace Vinted, raising suspicions of organised resale. According to investigators, Thomas M was responsible for overseeing valuable silverware and preparing tables for state banquets and high-profile official events. He is accused of removing items over […]

Israeli airstrikes hit targets across Lebanon

Israel has launched a new wave of strikes on southern and eastern Lebanon, hitting several locations that the Israeli military says are linked to Hezbollah. Lebanon’s state run National News Agency reported multiple strikes on mountainous areas in both regions. The Israeli military said its forces targeted what it described as “terror infrastructure sites” in different parts of Lebanon. It said the targets included “a military compound used by Hezbollah to conduct training and courses” for members of the Iran backed group. In a separate statement, the army said its forces “a short while ago” struck a Hezbollah fighter in the Taybeh area of southern Lebanon. No details were given about casualties from that strike or the wider series of attacks. The latest strikes come despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024 that was meant to end more than […]

Deschamps relishes Mbappe Haaland showdown in 2026 World Cup group

France coach Didier Deschamps says he is excited by the prospect of a World Cup group stage showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland after France were drawn with Norway for the 2026 tournament. Speaking after Friday’s draw in Washington, Deschamps called the meeting of the Real Madrid and Manchester City stars a “beautiful duel”, noting that both are global icons and leading contenders for the Golden Boot. France and Norway will face each other in Group I alongside Senegal, with the final team to come from an intercontinental playoff between Iraq, Bolivia or Suriname, in what Deschamps described as one of the toughest groups. Mbappe has already scored around 30 goals in 24 appearances for club and country this season, while Haaland has hit more than 30 in a similar number of games, form that underlines expectations around their […]

Niger Puts Nationalised Uranium on Global Market

Niger’s military government has announced that uranium produced by Somair, a company it nationalised from French nuclear firm Orano in June, is now being offered on the international market. The move marks a new phase in the standoff between the junta, which seized power in 2023, and Orano, a group that is 90 percent owned by the French state and has mined uranium in Niger for decades. The decision was made public on state broadcaster Télé Sahel, quoting junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani. He insisted Niger had the sovereign right to manage its natural resources and to sell them “to whoever wants to buy them” under normal market rules and in full independence. Russia has already signalled interest in Niger’s uranium, with Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev saying in July that Moscow wanted to start mining operations in the country. Since […]

Total Faces War Crimes Claims Over Mozambique Massacre

French energy company TotalEnergies is facing accusations of complicity in war crimes related to a 2021 massacre near its gas project in northern Mozambique. A human rights group has filed a complaint in France, alleging Total enabled or supported actions by local security forces who tortured and killed dozens of civilians at its facility. The events happened in Cabo Delgado, a region troubled by violent Islamist militants. In March 2021, after insurgents attacked the town of Palma near Total’s gas plant, Mozambican soldiers reportedly detained and executed civilians in shipping containers at the site. Some victims were accused of helping the militants, but the actual number killed remains unclear. One investigative journalist estimates at least 97 deaths, possibly more. Total has denied any involvement, saying it cannot be held responsible for actions of troops guarding its gas works. The company’s […]
