A senior employee at France’s presidential palace is set to face trial over allegations that valuable tableware was stolen from the Élysée’s official collections.
Investigators say nearly 100 items reported missing, including Baccarat champagne flutes, Sèvres porcelain plates, solid silver cutlery and a René Lalique figurine, were later discovered in the locker, vehicle and home of Thomas M, identified by French media as the palace’s chief butler. He will appear in court alongside two other defendants.
Prosecutors estimate the value of the items at between €15,000 and €40,000. Some of the objects were allegedly found listed for sale on Thomas M’s account on the online marketplace Vinted, raising suspicions of organised resale.
According to investigators, Thomas M was responsible for overseeing valuable silverware and preparing tables for state banquets and high-profile official events. He is accused of removing items over several months and falsifying inventory records to conceal the losses. Authorities also claim the records suggest further thefts may have been planned.
France’s state-owned porcelain manufacturer, Sèvres, reported identifying some of its missing pieces on auction websites, including plates marked with air force insignia and decorative ashtrays.
Thomas M was arrested on 16 December along with his partner, Damien G, described as a collector and manager of an online auction business. A third suspect, Ghislain M, was detained the following day on suspicion of handling stolen goods. His lawyer has argued that his client’s interest in rare antiques explains his alleged involvement.
Le Parisien, which first revealed the case, reported that Ghislain M was employed as a security guard at the Louvre Museum at the time and has since been suspended pending the outcome of the trial.
The Élysée Palace has reportedly begun the process of recruiting a replacement for Thomas M. The trial is scheduled to take place in February.
