‘Jamaica started Afrobeats’, says Rapper Fat Joe

American rapper Fat Joe has stirred controversy by claiming that Afrobeats originated from Jamaica. The veteran hip hop star made the remark on a recent episode of his “Joe and Jada” podcast while hosting Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton. “Jamaica started Afrobeats. Even though everything comes from Africa,” Fat Joe declared during the conversation. Buju Banton did not directly challenge the statement. Instead, he steered the discussion towards the roots of reggaeton, crediting Panamanian rapper El General as a pioneer whose work helped shape the genre and influence others. Davido joins Kuti family as Fela gets Grammy Lifetime Award

Afrobeats star Davido joined members of the Kuti family in Los Angeles for the Grammy Honors Party held in celebration of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who is receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. The event marks Fela as the first African artist to receive the prestigious honour. Videos shared on Instagram by Davido’s logistics manager, Israel DMW, showed Davido with Femi and Yeni Kuti and other team members at the ceremony. Israel captioned one of the clips, calling it “A night for late Fela Anikulapo Kuti… Outside LA.” Fela will be formally recognised at a special ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday, on the eve of the main Grammy Awards gala. Shaffy Bello says Wizkid, Davido, Burna match Fela’s status

Actress Shaffy Bello has said Nigerian stars Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy have reached the same level of international recognition as Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. She made the comment on the podcast What I Know co hosted by Korty EO.​ Asked if today’s artists could ever become as big and impactful as Fela, Bello replied that some have already done so.
