Afrobeats star Davido joined members of the Kuti family in Los Angeles for the Grammy Honors Party held in celebration of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who is receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.
The event marks Fela as the first African artist to receive the prestigious honour. Videos shared on Instagram by Davido’s logistics manager, Israel DMW, showed Davido with Femi and Yeni Kuti and other team members at the ceremony. Israel captioned one of the clips, calling it “A night for late Fela Anikulapo Kuti… Outside LA.”
Fela will be formally recognised at a special ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday, on the eve of the main Grammy Awards gala. Other Lifetime Achievement Award recipients include global music greats such as Cher, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon and Chaka Khan.
Fela’s first cousin and head of the Kuti family, Yemisi Ransome Kuti, described the award as a victory for Africa and urged Africans to see it as their own achievement. She said Fela was not overly concerned about Western recognition while alive but would likely have called the honour “better late than never.”
Ransome Kuti also appealed to award bodies not to wait until artists are dead before acknowledging their impact.
Meanwhile, Davido’s song “With You” featuring Omah Lay has been nominated for Best African Music Performance at this year’s Grammys. The category also includes Burna Boy’s “Love”, Wizkid and Ayra Starr’s “Gimme Dat”, “Hope and Love” by Ugandan star Eddy Kenzo featuring Mehran Matin, and “Push 2 Start” by South African singer Tyla.
