Court orders INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, AA, APP, and ZLP

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgement on Monday, ruling that the parties persistently failed to meet the electoral performance thresholds set in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The suit was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to compel INEC to deregister parties that do not comply with constitutional requirements under the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC regulations. 2027 Presidency: Controversies Trail ADC Primaries, Court Clears Jonathan

Controversies have trailed the presidential primaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike jostle for the party’s ticket ahead of the 2027 general election. The heightened tension within the ADC followed the Federal High Court judgment delivered on Tuesday in Abuja, which cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election. Justice Peter Lifu dismissed a suit filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi seeking to bar Jonathan from running, ruling that the former president remains eligible under the 1999 Constitution as amended. Justice Lifu held that Section 137(3) of the Constitution, which restricts any person from taking the oath of office of president more than twice, could not be applied retroactively to Jonathan, who completed the tenure of the late […]

2027: Court Dismisses Suit Querying Jonathan’s Eligibility

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit questioning former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election. The suit, filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi in 2025, sought a declaration that Jonathan was constitutionally barred from running again, having already completed the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and then served a full term after the 2011 election. The plaintiff relied on Sections 1(1)–(3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that Jonathan had effectively been sworn in as president twice. In its judgment delivered on May 26, the court held that the constitutional amendment introducing Section 137(3), which limits anyone who has taken the oath of office of president more than twice from contesting again, could not be applied retroactively to Jonathan. The judge agreed with arguments by Jonathan’s counsel, Chris Uche […]

The judge ruled that discretion in requests for prohibition from party activities and in political matters must be exercised judicially and judiciously. Justice Lifu added that justice would be met in the case of the plaintiffs only when the side of the defendant is heard on […]
