High Court rules FCCPC can probe customers’ complaints against banks, other financial institutions

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has the power to investigate consumers’ complaints against banks and other financial institutions. The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, dismissed a suit filed by United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, which had challenged the Commission’s jurisdiction in matters involving a commercial bank licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). UBA’s case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1972/2025, was thrown out in its entirety and the bank was fined N2 million for filing what the judge described as a frivolous and unmeritorious action. Alleged coup: Military inaugurates general court martial, begins trial of suspects

The Nigerian military has inaugurated a general court martial to try officers accused in an alleged coup plot, formally kicking off internal trial proceedings months after their arrest. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused personnel were brought under tight security to the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, where the court martial is sitting. BREAKING: El Rufai arraigned in Abuja over alleged bugging of NSA Ribadu’s phone

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai has been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja over his alleged involvement in the unlawful bugging of the telephone line of National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.​ El Rufai pleaded not guilty to a five count amended charge when it was read to him on Thursday morning before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. FG files treason terrorism charges against ex minister Sylva and others

The Federal Government has filed a 13 count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva and six others over an alleged plot to wage war against Nigeria and commit acts of terrorism. Those charged alongside Sylva are retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Navy Captain Erasmus Victor, serving police inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani. They are expected to be arraigned on Wednesday before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. Court documents describe Sylva as being at large. Ex minister Uche Nnaji UNN move to settle certificate case out of court

Former Minister of Innovation Science and Technology Uche Nnaji and the University of Nigeria Nsukka have agreed to explore an out of court settlement in the case over alleged certificate forgery.​ Nnaji had sued UNN and other parties at the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the university from releasing his academic records following media reports that he forged his degree and NYSC certificates. The allegations led to his resignation from the cabinet in 2025.​ At Monday’s hearing Nnaji’s lawyer Ope Muritala told Justice Hauwa Yilwa that all parties were now discussing a possible amicable resolution of the dispute. Court fixes May 26 for DSS to open case against Malami, son

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 26 for the Department of State Services (DSS) to open its case of alleged terrorism against former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his son, Abdulaziz. The DSS is prosecuting Malami and his son on terrorism‑related charges before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. At Tuesday’s hearing, prosecution counsel Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, informed the court that an amended five‑count charge had been filed to replace an earlier one on which the defendants were arraigned. JUST IN: Supreme Court to hear appeals on PDP leadership dispute on April 22

The Supreme Court has fixed April 22 for the hearing of two appeals filed by the Kabiru Turaki‑led leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging recent judgments on the party’s national leadership dispute. A five‑member panel of the apex court headed by Justice Mohammed Garba set the date on Tuesday while ruling on applications seeking accelerated hearing. The court granted the requests, allowing a departure from its usual rules and abridging the time within which the respondents must file their briefs. Under the timetable, the respondents have five days to file their briefs of argument, while the appellants are to file any reply briefs within two days. EFCC Insists On Retrial Of Sule Lamido By Former Judge

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has insisted that the retrial of former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido on alleged N1.35 billion fraud charges should be handled by the original trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu. The anti graft agency revealed it has written to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, requesting that Justice Ojukwu, who was transferred to the Calabar division, be brought back to Abuja to continue with the case. NBA condemns alleged judicial bullying, demands release of detained lawyers

The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned what it calls a growing pattern of judicial overreach and intimidation of lawyers, following reports of judges ordering the detention of legal practitioners in controversial circumstances in Rivers State and Abuja. NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe said the association received reports from a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt, where Justice Chinwendu Nwogu allegedly convicted and ordered the detention of defence counsel Mrs Lovinah Ugbana Benjamin for contempt after delivering judgment in Suit No. PHC/301/2016, Bodiseowei Zidougha v. Chief of Naval Staff and others. Court jails ex acting AGF Nwabuoku eight years for N868m fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former acting Accountant General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of N868 million money laundering charges.​ Justice James Omotosho ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved all nine counts against Nwabuoku beyond reasonable doubt, as required by law.
