Former Minister of Innovation Science and Technology Uche Nnaji and the University of Nigeria Nsukka have agreed to explore an out of court settlement in the case over alleged certificate forgery. Nnaji had sued UNN and other parties at the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the university from releasing his academic records following media reports that he forged his degree and NYSC certificates. The allegations led to his resignation from the cabinet in 2025. At Monday’s hearing Nnaji’s lawyer Ope Muritala told Justice Hauwa Yilwa that all parties were now discussing a possible amicable resolution of the dispute. He therefore asked for an adjournment to allow time for the talks. Lawyers representing the Minister of Education and the National Universities Commission said they were only learning of the settlement move in court but did not oppose the request. EFCC Insists On Retrial Of Sule Lamido By Former Judge

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has insisted that the retrial of former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido on alleged N1.35 billion fraud charges should be handled by the original trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu. The anti graft agency revealed it has written to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, requesting that Justice Ojukwu, who was transferred to the Calabar division, be brought back to Abuja to continue with the case. Lamido, his two sons Aminu and Mustapha, and some companies are facing a 37 count charge bordering on money laundering and alleged diversion of funds linked to Jigawa State contracts while he was governor. The defendants were first arraigned in 2015, but in July 2023 the Court of Appeal upheld their no case submissions and struck out the charges, prompting the EFCC to […]

NBA condemns alleged judicial bullying, demands release of detained lawyers

The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned what it calls a growing pattern of judicial overreach and intimidation of lawyers, following reports of judges ordering the detention of legal practitioners in controversial circumstances in Rivers State and Abuja. NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe said the association received reports from a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt, where Justice Chinwendu Nwogu allegedly convicted and ordered the detention of defence counsel Mrs Lovinah Ugbana Benjamin for contempt after delivering judgment in Suit No. PHC/301/2016, Bodiseowei Zidougha v. Chief of Naval Staff and others. According to the NBA, the judge claimed the naval lawyer committed contempt in the face of the court by making false statements and imputations against the court in her written address. The association described the action as high handed and warned that such use of contempt powers undermines the […]

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former acting Accountant General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of N868 million money laundering charges. Justice James Omotosho ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved all nine counts against Nwabuoku beyond reasonable doubt, as required by law. He rejected any option of fine and ordered that the eight year sentence on each count should run concurrently. The judge described Nwabuoku’s conduct as appalling, noting that he diverted funds meant for security and defence while serving as Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021. Justice Omotosho praised the EFCC for the detailed manner in which it handled the prosecution. Court clears Abba Kyari in asset non declaration case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the non declaration of assets case filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency against suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and his two brothers. Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho held that the NDLEA failed to provide sufficient and credible evidence to prove that Kyari owned the properties and funds listed in the charge sheet. The judge ruled that the prosecution did not tender documents clearly linking Kyari to several properties in Abuja and Maiduguri, or to the bank accounts said to contain over N207 million and 17,598 euros. He noted that under the law, ownership of landed property must be proved through title documents, traditional history or clear acts of possession, but the NDLEA did not meet this requirement in court. Justice Omotosho also accepted Kyari’s explanation that some of […]
