Why FG Hasn’t Prosecuted Terrorism Financiers – Minister

The Federal Government has not prosecuted suspected terrorism financiers because such cases require extensive, delicate investigations that cannot be rushed, according to Minister of Information Mohammed Idris. Speaking on Channels TV, Idris said the process is not as simple as having a list and moving suspects to court; solid evidence must first be gathered. Public pressure remains high, with critics linking delays to government complicity and growing insecurity. While some suspects were identified under past administrations, no high-profile cases have materialized in court, fueling distrust. Idris insisted progress is being made—highlighting that since May 2023, over 13,500 criminals have been neutralized, and 17,000 apprehended—with many already being tried or sentenced for security-related offenses. He called for patience and partnership with both domestic and foreign allies, emphasizing the complexity and diversity of Nigeria’s security crisis and ongoing diplomatic efforts to clarify […]

ASUU Rejects Federal Government’s Proposed Salary Increment

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Benin Zone has rejected the salary increment recently proposed by the Federal Government, calling it insufficient to address the union’s concerns or to reverse the ongoing brain drain in Nigerian universities. Zonal Coordinator Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen stated that the offer was “a mere drop in the ocean” compared to what’s needed. ASUU stressed the need for government to tackle all outstanding issues, including fully renegotiating the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and truly addressing related matters. Igbafen criticized the half-hearted approach of the government, noting that Nigerian university lecturers are still being paid at a level fixed back in 2009, despite economic changes and salary hikes in other sectors. He concluded that the union would not accept piecemeal solutions, urging authorities to take university reform seriously to ensure stable and quality education in Nigeria.

ASUU Warns Universities May Shut Down Over Stalled Talks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned it may begin a nationwide strike if ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government do not yield results soon. This warning comes as talks over academic staff salaries, promotion arrears, and withheld payments have stalled. ASUU officials said lecturers have been on the same salary for 16 years, noting that inflation and the rising cost of living have made conditions very difficult. They rejected the government’s proposed salary increment, describing it as inadequate to address brain drain and improve working conditions. The union also criticized the government’s slow pace in resolving issues, including unpaid wage awards, promotion arrears since 2017, and partial payment of third-party deductions. ASUU argued that the challenge is political will, not lack of funds, pointing to increased government revenue in recent years. Union leaders urged traditional rulers, civil society, […]

NARD faults FG’s claims on doctors’ welfare, says “facts must replace fiction”

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has faulted the recent statement by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare titled “FG Reaffirms Commitment to Doctors’ Welfare and Industrial Harmony in the Health Sector,” describing it as misleading and disconnected from the realities faced by medical professionals across Nigeria. In a rejoinder issued on Monday, NARD accused the ministry of presenting an “optimistic narrative” that obscures the true challenges confronting doctors. “We do not intend to join issues with the Ministry, but for the sake of transparency, truth, and the health of Nigerians, it is imperative to set the records straight, particularly for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who may have been misinformed about the true nature of our grievances,” the association said. According to NARD, the union has 19 outstanding demands repeatedly presented to the Federal Government. It described […]

FG launches Waste Marketplace to turn waste into economic assets

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has launched the National Waste Marketplace Programme (NWMP) — a landmark initiative designed to convert waste streams into economic assets and strengthen Nigeria’s circular economy. The programme, developed in collaboration with RecycleStack, was officially unveiled on Thursday during a sensitisation workshop in Abuja. Speaking at the event, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, described the NWMP as a “practical step towards modernising Nigeria’s waste management system and mainstreaming circular economy principles.” According to Lawal, the digital platform will formalise the nation’s waste value chain by connecting waste generators, collectors, aggregators, and recyclers to end-users through a transparent, traceable, and technology-driven system. He explained that the platform will foster environmental compliance, resource recovery, and sustainable production and consumption patterns, while also […]

SSANU, NASU give FG 7-day strike notice over unpaid allowances

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved welfare issues, warning of a nationwide strike. In a joint letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions decried the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances, non-payment of outstanding salaries and arrears, and stalled renegotiation of agreements.” The letter recalled that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU had earlier written to the government on June 18, 2025, highlighting unresolved matters. That letter led to a meeting with the Minister on July 4. According to the unions, discussions centred on: the skewed N50bn earned allowances distribution, non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries, arrears of 25/35% salary increments, and the delayed renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement. While a […]

NLC Demands Urgent Minimum Wage Review, Says ₦70,000 Unsustainable

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and federal civil servants have called on the Federal Government to urgently review the national minimum wage, insisting that the current ₦70,000 is no longer realistic in the face of rising inflation and economic hardship. President Bola Tinubu had signed the new National Minimum Wage Bill into law in July 2024, raising the wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 across the public and private sectors. But workers now argue that the fast-rising cost of living has eroded its value. Recent wage increases in several states have intensified pressure on the federal government. Imo State raised its minimum wage to ₦104,000 in August 2025, while Lagos and Rivers pegged theirs at ₦85,000, with Lagos promising a further rise to ₦100,000 in 2025. Other states like Bayelsa, Niger, Enugu, and Akwa Ibom approved ₦80,000; Ogun and Delta ₦77,000; […]
