ASUU Rejects FG Loan Offer, Calls It a Greek Gift

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, has rejected the federal government’s loan proposal for lecturers, describing it as a “Greek gift.” During a special congress held on campus Tuesday, the union said its members were not interested in loans but in the fulfillment of existing welfare agreements. Speaking to members after a solidarity march from the university’s main gate, the UNILAG Branch Chairman, Prof. Idowu Kehinde, stressed that the government should focus on paying lecturers their entitlements rather than offering loans. “The loans are to be guaranteed by our union. This is unnecessary. University governing councils can already provide loans to staff based on their conditions of service. If we are paid a living wage and our allowances are settled as agreed, no one will need to borrow money. Let the government do the […]

IPOB Lawyer: Federal Government Has No Legal Basis to Detain Nnamdi Kanu

A member of the legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has insisted that the Federal Government lacks any legal justification for his continued detention. Barrister Onyedikachi Ifedi, in a strongly worded statement on Sunday, dismissed recent media publications describing IPOB’s push for Kanu’s acquittal as “political theatre,” calling them “government-sponsored propaganda.” He argued that Kanu’s arrest in Kenya in June 2021 amounted to extraordinary rendition, a process prohibited under both Nigerian and international law. Citing the Court of Appeal’s October 2022 judgment, Ifedi noted that the court had declared Kanu’s rendition unlawful and struck out the charges. He criticized the Supreme Court’s December 2023 ruling, which reinstated the case, as a “violation of settled legal principles.” The lawyer further contended that the government is prosecuting Kanu under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act of […]

JUST IN: FG Freezes New Federal Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges for Seven Years

The Federal Government has placed a seven-year ban on establishing new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, in what it describes as a bold move to tackle falling standards and crumbling infrastructure in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the moratorium on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Alausa said the suspension — which covers all categories of federal tertiary institutions — will curb duplication, eliminate waste, and allow government to concentrate resources on rehabilitating facilities, improving manpower, and expanding capacity in existing schools. “Access to tertiary education is no longer Nigeria’s problem. The proliferation of institutions has stretched resources thin, leading to deteriorating infrastructure and declining graduate quality,” he warned. The minister revealed alarming statistics: Nigeria currently has 72 public […]
