Insecurity in Yorubaland: Is Amotekun Still Effective in South-West?

Four years after its creation, the regional security outfit Amotekun (Operation Leopard) is still grappling with the hydra-headed security challenges in Nigeria’s South-West, as kidnappings, killings, and banditry continue to surge across Yorubaland. When the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, was set up in 2020, it was launched with fanfare and optimism that it would tame the rising insecurity plaguing the Southwest. Four years on, however, stakeholders believe there has been a surge in crime and criminality within the region. Grandpas arrested for drug trafficking in Abia, Ekiti

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested elderly suspects described as grandpas for alleged drug trafficking in Abia and Ekiti states. The agency said the arrests were made during separate operations targeting the supply and distribution of hard drugs in both states. In Abia State, NDLEA officers apprehended an elderly suspect during a cartel raid linked to the trafficking of methamphetamine and other illicit substances. The operation followed intelligence that the area was being used as a base for storing and moving drugs to other parts of the country. In Ekiti State, another special raid led to the arrest of an 80 year old man identified as Oke Samuel at Mosafuneto camp. NDLEA arrests ex convict, three others over UK bound cocaine hidden in starch sachets

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested an ex convict, Nwobodo Chidiebere Basil, and three cargo agents after intercepting cocaine concealed in liquid starch sachets and destined for the United Kingdom. NDLEA operatives recovered 75 parcels of cocaine weighing 1.50kg from factory sealed cold water starch sachets at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.​ Agency spokesman Femi Babafemi said the three cargo agents, Jubrin Firdausi Hassana, Kuku Daniel Oluwasegun and Igwe Chioma Jane, were arrested on Saturday, December 20, 2025, in connection with the shipment. Oyo Govt, UNICEF Push for Stronger Prosecution of FGM Cases

The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has called for stronger prosecution of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) cases across Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States. The demand was made at a 3-day Multi-sectoral Engagement meeting in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, which brought together law enforcement officers, judicial actors, NGOs, agencies, and religious leaders.
