Institute Seeks Regulatory Commission to Fix Nigeria’s Ailing Courier, Logistics Sector

Professor Simon Emeje, Chairman of the Courier and Logistics Management Institute (CLMI), has called for the urgent establishment of an independent regulatory commission to reposition Nigeria’s courier and logistics industry. Despite being Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria is among less than 3% of countries without such independent regulation, leaving the industry plagued by inconsistent tariffs, conflicting policies, and a harsh business climate. Emeje warned that stagnant regulation forces firms to close or shift sectors and lamented overlapping controls from customs and other agencies. He emphasized the need for technical, not political, oversight and expanded professional training in logistics. He noted the sector’s economic potential (valued at $60 billion, with assets up to ₦20 trillion) and called for logistics education in universities. Emeje also highlighted the long-delayed regulatory bill, drafted in 2005 but never enacted, and urged Nigeria to boost intra-African trade […]

China has rejected the recent threat by former US President Donald Trump to take military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians. The Chinese government said it firmly opposes any external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. In a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, spokesperson Mao Ning said China supports Nigeria’s right to choose its own development path in line with its national realities. He warned against using religion and human rights as excuses for interference. “As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits its realities. We oppose any country’s interference in others’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion or human rights,” Mao stated. Trump had recently accused Nigeria of tolerating the killing of Christians and threatened to cut aid or launch military […]

EBID Adjusts Strategy Amid Trade Tensions and Monetary Easing

Lomé, Sept. 29, 2025 – The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) is recalibrating its strategy as global trade frictions and shifting monetary policies reshape Africa’s economic outlook. Meeting in Lomé for its 93rd board session, the institution approved $308 million in loans for projects in Guinea and Nigeria. Inflationary Pressures from U.S. Tariffs EBID President George Agyekum Donkor warned that U.S. export tariffs introduced under the Trump administration continue to fuel inflation across African economies. “These taxes increase the price of products and services and generate a direct impact on our economies,” Donkor said. He noted that higher production and service costs are eroding household purchasing power and undermining the competitiveness of local businesses. Leveraging Global Monetary Easing While trade tensions persist, EBID sees opportunities in international capital markets. With the U.S. Federal Reserve cutting rates by 25 […]

Burkina Faso Scraps Visa Fees for All African Nationals

Burkina Faso has announced the abolition of visa fees for all African citizens, a move aimed at deepening Pan-African solidarity and promoting free movement across the continent. The country’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, revealed the decision on Thursday following a cabinet meeting chaired by military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré. “From now on, any citizen from an African country wishing to go to Burkina Faso will not pay any amount to cover visa fees,” Sana stated. He clarified that while the charges have been scrapped, travellers must still complete an online application for entry approval. Citizens of West African nations already enjoy visa-free access to Burkina Faso. However, the latest move comes amid uncertainty over the country’s status in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which Burkina Faso quit earlier this year alongside Mali and Niger. Ghana accepts Nigerians, other West Africans deported from US

Ghana has begun receiving West African nationals deported from the United States, including Nigerians, President John Dramani Mahama announced on Wednesday. According to Reuters, Mahama confirmed that a first batch of 14 deportees — comprising Nigerians, a Gambian, and other West Africans — had already landed in Accra, with Ghanaian authorities assisting in their repatriation to their respective countries. “We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come to our country,” Mahama explained. He added that the arrangement was logical since ECOWAS citizens already enjoy visa-free access to Ghana. The development comes amid Washington’s intensified deportation drive under President Donald Trump, who has expanded removals to “third countries” as […]

Guinea-Bissau Faces Political Crisis as President Embalo Stays Beyond Term

Guinea-Bissau faces mounting political uncertainty after President Umaro Sissoco Embalo remained in office despite the official end of his term. Embalo’s mandate expired at midnight on Thursday, but instead of stepping aside, he declared that he would continue carrying out presidential duties until elections scheduled for November 23. Opposition parties denounced the move as an illegal power grab. Embalo is widely expected to seek a second term, but critics say his refusal to leave office risks plunging the country into another constitutional crisis. Guinea-Bissau’s constitution allows a five-year presidential term with a maximum of two terms. The opposition argues that Embalo’s tenure should have ended in February, though the Supreme Court ruled it extended until September 4. For months, opposition groups have refused to recognize Embalo as president. At the same time, parliamentary elections have not been held since the […]
