ECOWAS has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making bodies following the recent military coup in the country. The regional bloc said the takeover violated its protocols on democracy and good governance and could destabilise West Africa if left unchecked.
In a statement issued after an emergency summit, ECOWAS leaders condemned the coup and demanded the immediate restoration of constitutional order. They called on the coup leaders to release all detained officials, respect human rights and set a clear timetable for a return to democratic rule.
The organisation warned that additional political and economic sanctions could follow if its demands are ignored. Member states were urged to remain vigilant and coordinate efforts to prevent the crisis in Guinea-Bissau from spilling over into neighbouring countries.
ECOWAS also appealed to the African Union, United Nations and other international partners to support its efforts. It stressed that repeated coups in the region undermine hard-won democratic gains and threaten collective security.
