Ogba: El-Rufai should face DSS over seized passport

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Chidi Ogba, has urged former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai to report to the Department of State Services (DSS) over the seizure of his international passport. Ogba said there is nothing wrong with making himself available for questioning if he is confident he has done nothing wrong. Security agents recently intercepted El-Rufai at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after his return from Cairo, Egypt, and confiscated his passport. His lawyer condemned the incident as an attempted arrest without a warrant and described the seizure of the passport as unconstitutional and an abuse of power. Ogba, however, argued that instead of relying only on public sympathy, El-Rufai should formally present himself to the DSS or any relevant security agency to clear up any issues. He maintained that submitting […]

Court fixes Jan 22 for Sowore’s trial over Tinubu tweet

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 22 for the start of the trial of Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore over alleged false claims against President Bola Tinubu. Justice Mohammed Umar set the date after Sowore pleaded not guilty to a two count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services. In the amended charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025 and filed on December 5, Sowore is listed as the only defendant. X Inc, formerly Twitter, and Meta, owner of Facebook, which were earlier joined as second and third defendants, were removed from the case at the request of the prosecution. The DSS alleges that on or about August 25 2025, Sowore used his X handle @YeleSowore to post a message accusing Tinubu of falsely claiming in Brazil that there was no more corruption under his government. Prosecutors say he […]

ISWAP attacks: Court exonerates DSS over terror suspect’s whereabouts

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has exonerated the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that it secretly detained and killed alleged ISWAP leader in Kogi, Yusuf Lukman Omeiza, who was linked to a series of terror attacks. The suit was filed by Omeiza’s relatives, Jimoh Yusuf and Fati Mohammed, who sought declarations that his alleged arrest, detention and killing without trial violated his right to life and demanded 10 billion naira in damages from the DSS and the Attorney General of the Federation. Lawyers to the plaintiffs relied largely on claims that the suspect had disappeared after his 2015 arrest in Okene, insisting that security agents must be held responsible. However, the DSS, through its counsel, argued that the allegation of extra‑judicial killing was based on hearsay and tendered documents to show that Omeiza was transferred to […]

DSS Frees Three Men Wrongly Held Over Banditry Allegations

The Department of State Services has released three men earlier arrested on suspicion of involvement in banditry and kidnapping after a fresh review showed they were wrongly detained. The men were picked up in June 2025 as part of wider security operations targeting banditry networks in the country. A special review panel set up by the DSS examined their case and concluded that investigations did not establish any link between the suspects and the alleged crimes. Following this finding, the Director General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, ordered their immediate release. The three men, identified as Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu and Jaja Sarki Bamo, were also granted financial compensation approved by the DSS leadership. The payment is intended to acknowledge the error in their arrest and to support their reintegration after months in custody. Security sources indicated that […]

Appeal Court strikes out Nnamdi Kanu’s rights violation case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has struck out an appeal by convicted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, ruling that his case alleging violations of fundamental rights by the Director General of the DSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation lacked merit and had become academic. The court held that Kanu’s complaint could no longer stand following his November 20 conviction for terrorism offences by a Federal High Court and his subsequent life imprisonment and remand in prison custody. In the lead judgment, Justice Boloukuromo Moses Ugo said that once Kanu’s counsel, Maxwell Opara, confirmed that his client was now held at Sokoto prison, the request to be moved from the DSS facility to Kuje prison was no longer one the appellate court could grant. The judge added that Kanu had previously indicated a preference for prison custody, so his prayers […]

The Nigerian Air Force is to coordinate the aerial patrol with ground troops to deter kidnappers, track criminal movements, and enable faster rescue missions for victims. The move follows the recent abduction of more than 20 people—including women and children—in Isapa, Kwara. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to pull teachers from unsafe classrooms, demanding urgent government action to secure schools and rescue those in captivity. The United Nations has also called for immediate steps to end the wave of mass kidnappings. Kwara’s governor set up a high-level committee to develop local security solutions, while Kebbi's governor welcomed the safe return of 25 abducted schoolgirls—affirming no ransom was paid, crediting […]

Media Condemns DSS Arrest of Two Journalists in Jos

The arrest of two journalists by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Jos has been widely condemned as an attack on press freedom. The journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang from Jay 101.9 FM, were detained while covering the funeral of the APC National Chairman's mother. They had filmed a minor incident where security personnel initially blocked a church leader from entering the venue. In a strong statement, the radio station's management described the arrest as "illegal, undemocratic, and unacceptable." They emphasized that the journalists were simply doing their job by documenting an event of public interest. The station warned that intimidating the press is a dangerous trend that undermines democracy. They vowed not to be silenced and called on the public and international community to stand for press freedom and the rule of law. The journalists were later […]

NAPTIP rescues 8 stolen children from Delta orphanage

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued eight children suspected to have been stolen from Kano and neighbouring states and trafficked to the South. NAPTIP’s spokesperson, Vincent Adekoye, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday titled “NAPTIP rescues eight suspected stolen children from a popular orphanage in Asaba.” According to the agency, intelligence gathered showed that syndicates posing as traders had been luring children aged between two and 10 years from northern communities since at least 2017, before transporting them to the South.
