2027: British govt has no preferred candidate, says envoy

The British government has declared that it has no preferred candidate or political party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. British Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria, Gill Lever, made this known during a courtesy visit to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in Ilorin. Lever stressed that the United Kingdom’s interest is in seeing a peaceful, free and credible electoral process, not in backing any particular contender. She explained that the UK would continue to work with whoever Nigerians elect, in line with its long-standing policy of respecting the country’s sovereignty and the will of its citizens. According to her, the British High Commission is closely monitoring Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 polls and will support initiatives that strengthen democratic institutions, voter education and electoral security. Tinubu says he took over from himself after Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has said he does not dwell on the state of the economy he met in office because he believes he simply took over from himself when he succeeded the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu made the comment while hosting the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a group created to explain his government’s agenda and reforms across the country. He described Buhari as his partner and argued that taking over from him was like taking over from himself. He told the group that leadership is a difficult journey but urged them to remain committed to renewing citizens’ hope. Tinubu said that if something in government is wrong, the task is to live with it, fix it and move on instead of complaining. The president promised his supporters that he would not abandon them. He said their role is to […]

Togo: Call for Integrity Over Power Longevity

Traoré Rejects Democracy in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso’s military leader, Ibrahim Traoré, has openly criticized democracy, saying the system “kills” and should be abandoned by the country. In an interview broadcast on state television, the 38-year-old leader argued that democracy is not suited to Burkina Faso or much of Africa. “People need to forget about the issue of democracy. Democracy is not for us,” he stated, without outlining a clear alternative model. Traoré, who took power in a 2022 coup, had initially promised a return to civilian rule by July 2024. However, the military government later extended its transition period by five years. In January, authorities also suspended all political parties, describing the move as part of efforts to rebuild the state. To support his argument, Traoré pointed to Libya, suggesting that attempts to impose democracy there led to instability and conflict. He claimed that Western-backed […]

Kwankwaso’s Defection To ADC: APC A Threat To Democracy – Mark

National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has described Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC as a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy. He spoke in Abuja as the former Kano State governor was formally received into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mark said Kwankwaso’s move was more than a simple change of platform. He framed it as a deliberate response to Nigerians’ calls for a cohesive opposition capable of safeguarding democratic values and providing a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress. The former Senate President accused the APC of posing the greatest threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria. He warned that attempts to weaken opposition parties, shrink political space and concentrate power in one party were dangerous for the country’s future. According to Mark, the ADC is positioning itself as a rallying […]

Urgent Call for Justice in Togo

The people of Togo have endured over six decades under a regime passed from father to son, where liberty is stifled and dissent punished. For too long, their voices have been silenced, their elections manipulated, and their basic rights denied. Yet the world has often remained silent, even as similar crises elsewhere have drawn swift international intervention. The principle of equity demands that what is deemed just in one nation should apply equally in another. The world has acted in Kosovo, Libya, and against regimes in Russia, North Korea, and Iran. Why, then, should Togo’s suffering be overlooked? To ignore it is to undermine the very foundations of international law and the ideals enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human dignity knows no borders, and those endowed with power bear a responsibility to protect it everywhere. Every day […]

Air Chief warns coup plotters will face full force of law

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, says any member of the Armed Forces found involved in plans to overthrow Nigeria’s democratic government will face the full wrath of the law. He spoke at a strategic meeting with Air Officers Commanding and Unit Commanders at Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja to mark his first 100 days in office. Aneke described recent revelations about an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration as shameful, shocking and completely unacceptable. He stressed that the Nigerian Air Force remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the democratically elected government. He reminded senior officers of their duty to uphold unity, cohesion and discipline within the ranks, especially as the country moves towards another election cycle. He said the military’s role is to support civil authorities and protect democratic processes without taking […]
