Russian authorities have arrested a political activist who had announced plans to run in regional elections scheduled for September.
The opposition figure, known for his criticism of President Vladimir Putin, was detained in one of Russia’s regions as pressure grows on independent and anti Kremlin candidates ahead of the polls.unn+1
Local media and rights groups say security agencies are increasingly using charges such as discrediting the army, extremism and administrative violations to sideline inconvenient candidates and block them from the ballot.unn
According to reports, the arrested activist had been preparing to contest the vote but now faces legal action that could disqualify him from running, in line with Russian laws that bar people with certain convictions or repeated administrative penalties from holding public office.dw+1
Analysts note that the move fits a wider pattern in Russia, where prominent critics of the government are often subjected to raids, arrests, court cases and bans before election campaigns formally begin.bbc+2
They warn that such tactics further narrow political competition and leave voters with limited genuine alternatives at the ballot box.

Appeal court bars INEC from recognising Mark-led ADC congresses
The appeal court has barred the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from recognising congresses organised by the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress, ADC. The court said INEC should not take part in or give recognition to any state congresses arranged by committees set up by the party’s caretaker leadership. It held that the responsibility for conducting state congresses belongs to the elected state executive committees of the party, not the national caretaker leadership. The court also ruled that the tenure of the ADC’s state working committees and state executive committees remains valid until properly organised congresses are held and a national convention is conducted. In its ruling, the court said neither the Nigerian Constitution nor the party’s constitution gives the caretaker interim national working committee led by David Mark the power to appoint committees for state congresses.
