Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has given fresh details about the decade‑long terror network run by slain Islamic State commander Abu‑Bilal Al‑Minuki, also known as Abu‑Mainok. The senior ISIS figure was confirmed killed this week in a joint Nigerian–US operation targeting his compound in the Lake Chad Basin. According to military and diplomatic briefings, Al‑Minuki had been on the radar of Western and African intelligence services for years as a key architect of ISIS’ expansion into West and Central Africa. DHQ: Most terrorist fighters driven by fear and money, not belief

The Defence Headquarters says that more than 60 percent of terrorist fighters in Nigeria are not driven by extremist ideology but by fear, coercion and financial incentives. It explained that many of those taking part in insurgent activities were forced to join or lured with promises of money and protection. A statement from DHQ noted that only a minority of the fighters are hardcore ideologues or commanders who are deeply committed to the violent cause. The rest are described as followers who became involved due to threats to their lives, lack of options or economic hardship in their communities. According to the military, some recruits were abducted as teenagers, pressured through family connections or told their relatives would be harmed if they refused to fight. Others were attracted by the promise of regular income, food or a sense of belonging […]

Gen Musa: How coup attempt was foiled at planning stage

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa has revealed how Nigerian security agencies foiled a planned coup at the “planning stage”, describing the plotters as a disgruntled group led by a colonel who failed promotion to brigadier general. Speaking on Channels Television, Musa said the officer, angered by his failure to meet promotion requirements, began mobilising other aggrieved elements within the Armed Forces, but joint monitoring by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and other security outfits exposed the plot early. He explained that this was why the military initially denied rumours of a coup last October, insisting investigators needed time to identify the real conspirators and avoid arresting innocent officers. The Defence Headquarters has now confirmed that investigations indicted 16 officers who will face court martial, though Musa declined to name the mastermind […]
