Nigeria Grants Visa-Free Entry to St. Kitts & Nevis

Nigeria has granted visa-free entry to citizens of St. Kitts & Nevis, effective September 26, 2025, marking the first time the policy extends beyond Africa. The waiver, which applies to ordinary, official, and diplomatic passports, is aimed at strengthening trade, investment, and cultural ties between the two nations. Until now, Nigeria’s visa-free access largely covered ECOWAS states, with Cameroon and Chad as the only non-ECOWAS African countries enjoying the privilege. The development follows the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit (AACIS ’25) held in Abuja earlier this year, organised by Aquarian Consult Limited (ACL). ACL’s Managing Director, Aisha Maina, said: “This visa waiver is more than diplomacy; it is about opening doors for trade, investment, and cultural exchange. At ACL, we are proud to have played a role in turning dialogue into action.” Diplomatic ties between Nigeria and St. Kitts & Nevis have […]

Tinubu Calls for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at UN

President Bola Tinubu has called for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, describing their continued existence as a grave threat to global peace and security. Delivering Nigeria’s statement at the high-level meeting commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at the UN headquarters in New York, Tinubu — represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar — urged nuclear powers to dismantle their arsenals without delay. “Nigeria will continue to do its part to ensure the total elimination of nuclear weapons is achieved,” Tinubu said. “The catastrophic humanitarian consequences that could result from either intentional use or unintentional explosion of these dangerous weapons are dire.” He warned that weapons of mass destruction pose significant risks not only to international peace but also to human health, the environment, and vital economic resources. The Nigerian leader […]

NEFGAD faults BPP’s defence of US fiscal transparency report

The Network for Public Procurement Advocacy and Development (NEFGAD) has faulted the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) over what it described as a “weak and deceptive” response to the 2025 U.S. Fiscal Transparency Report, which indicted Nigeria for failing to disclose procurement contract details. The U.S. Department of State, in its latest review, acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in publishing budget documents and debt obligations but flagged persistent opacity around public procurement, warning that it undermines accountability and weakens governance. The report, which assessed 139 countries and the Palestinian Authority, found that 71 governments met minimum fiscal transparency requirements, while 69 did not. Nigeria was listed among 32 African countries still lagging, alongside Egypt, Algeria, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Chad, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, and others. Specifically, the report faulted the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation for failing to publish […]

Global divisions deepen as more nations back Palestinian State

Momentum is growing for international recognition of a Palestinian State, even as the United States and Israel strongly oppose the move. On Monday, Britain formally recognised Palestine, following similar steps by Canada and Australia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the recognition “keeps alive the possibility of peace,” while reaffirming support for efforts to free Israeli hostages. As of September 2025, 150 of the 193 UN member states — over 78% — now recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had already granted Palestine non-member observer status in 2012. However, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the endorsements, calling them a “reward for terrorism.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was even more forceful, declaring: “There will be no Palestinian State west of the Jordan River.” Netanyahu argued that recognising Palestine undermines peace, while pledging to expand […]

Nigerian women demand reserved seats in parliament

Hundreds of women marched through Abuja on Monday to demand the passage of a bill that would reserve seats for women in Nigeria’s parliament. The proposed legislation, known as the Special Seats Bill, seeks to create one women-only seat in the Senate and House of Representatives for each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. If passed, the measure would require a constitutional amendment. Nigeria currently has one of the lowest levels of female representation in Africa, with only four women in the 109-seat Senate and 16 women in the 360-member House of Representatives, according to the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC). Many African countries, including Rwanda and Senegal, have successfully used quota systems to boost women’s participation in politics. “We want the legislature to work for women,” said activist Dorothy Njemanze, one of the organisers, who […]

Saudi Arabia frees 3 Nigerian pilgrims held for drug trafficking

Saudi authorities have released three Nigerian pilgrims who were wrongfully detained in Jeddah last month on allegations of drug trafficking. The Director of Media and Advocacy of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Femi Babafemi, confirmed their release on Wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja. The freed pilgrims are Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Abdulhamid Saddieq. They had been held for four weeks after drugs were found in luggage fraudulently tagged with their names at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport before boarding an Ethiopian Airlines flight ET940 to Jeddah on August 6, 2025. Babafemi said their freedom followed “weeks of sustained engagements” by NDLEA Chairman, Brig Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), with Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC), backed by President Bola Tinubu and senior Nigerian officials including Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Foreign […]

Ex-minister Adeniran prays for Tinubu, backs restructuring before 2027

Former Minister of Education and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Professor Tunde Adeniran, has prayed for the success of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stressing that restructuring and true federalism are essential for Nigeria’s progress. Speaking in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, the professor of political science told The Guardian that Nigeria could achieve restructuring before the 2027 general elections if the political will exists. “We need restructuring now so that we can have federalism. It can be done before the 2027 election,” he said. Adeniran added that his prayer for Tinubu was for him to succeed in office so that Nigeria could “be okay” and citizens could experience meaningful improvements in governance. The former minister’s comments come amid renewed debates on devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, and regional autonomy, with political analysts and civil society groups insisting that restructuring […]

Inflation will soon hit single digit, Presidency assures Nigerians

The Presidency has assured Nigerians that inflation will fall to a single digit soon, a development it says will make life easier for citizens. Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Tope Fasua, gave the assurance on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. Fasua said food prices are already beginning to stabilize as inflation eases, citing new figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). According to the NBS, headline inflation dropped to 20.12% in August 2025, down from 21.88% in July. On a monthly basis, headline inflation stood at 0.74%, while food inflation was 1.65%. Year-on-year, the figure was 12.03% lower than the 32.15% recorded in August 2024. “A 20.12 inflation is still large in many quarters because what it says is that prices are still increasing, but not as they used to be. The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, alongside X Corp (formerly Twitter) and Meta Platforms Inc., over posts critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Ganduje backs FAAN MRO hangars to make Nigeria aviation hub

Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has outlined a bold vision to establish world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hangars across Nigeria’s international airports, a move expected to reposition the country as the leading aviation hub in West and Central Africa. The multi-billion-naira initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure and economic diversification. Why MRO hangars matter Nigeria currently spends millions of dollars annually on aircraft maintenance abroad, especially for C-Checks and D-Checks. The new facilities would: Save foreign exchange Create jobs for skilled professionals and artisans Attract airlines from across West and Central Africa Strengthen Nigeria’s aviation self-reliance “The establishment of MRO hangars will mark a turning point for the aviation sector, creating sustainable growth and positioning Nigeria as a regional hub,” Ganduje said.
