Nigeria, Angola Sign New Bilateral Deals After 24-Year Pause

Nigeria and Angola have revived their Bilateral Joint Economic Commission after a 24-year hiatus, sealing fresh agreements to boost socio-economic, cultural, and political cooperation. The three-day meeting in Luanda was co-chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Angola’s Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Amb. Domingos Custodio Vieira Lopes. Among the highlights was a landmark twinning pact between Bayelsa State and Angola’s Namibe Province, covering areas such as energy, agriculture, environment, education, culture, tourism, and sports. A similar deal was also struck between Nasarawa State and Bengo Province. Bayelsa Governor Senator Douye Diri hailed the agreement as “historic,” noting its potential to unlock new opportunities: “Both Bayelsa and Namibe are naturally endowed, and this partnership will bring mutual benefits to our states and nations.” Namibe Governor Dr. Archer Mangueira described the pact as the […]

DSS Demands X Suspend Sowore’s Account Over Tinubu Post

The Department of State Services (DSS) has written to X (formerly Twitter), demanding the urgent suspension of the verified account of activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore over a post on President Bola Tinubu. The agency alleged that Sowore’s August 25 post, in which he described Tinubu as a “criminal” while reacting to the president’s anti-corruption remarks in Brazil, was capable of inciting violence and undermining national security. In a letter dated September 6, signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DSS Director-General, the agency said the “tweet” ridiculed the president before the international community and had already sparked protests by Tinubu’s supporters. “The said tweet is still in circulation and has attracted widespread condemnation by majority of Nigerians, some of whom may resort to unwholesome activities… thereby creating political tension and threatening the country’s national security,” the letter reads. WHO Urges Nigeria to Allocate 20% of Budget to Health

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called on Nigeria to increase public health spending to at least 20 percent of the national budget to strengthen its healthcare system. The appeal was made by WHO Regional Director, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, on Thursday in Abuja during the National Health Financing Dialogue themed “Reimagining the Future of Health Financing in Nigeria.” Janabi described sustainable healthcare financing as the backbone of resilient health systems, stressing that higher investment would reduce out-of-pocket spending, protect households, and improve access to care through stronger prepayment and pooling mechanisms. “With over 223 million citizens, how Nigeria finances health is critical not just for its people but for Africa’s future. Healthier populations are more productive, more resilient to shocks, and better positioned to drive inclusive growth,” he said. Commending Nigeria’s health reforms, including the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, the […]

Tinubu, Lula Back Soyinka’s Heritage Voyage Project

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have formally endorsed the Heritage Voyage of Return (HVR) — a cultural initiative led by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka to reconnect Afro-descendants with their ancestral roots in Africa. The endorsement was announced during President Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil in August, where both leaders pledged full support for the symbolic “homecoming voyage.” The project envisions descendants of enslaved Africans in Brazil, the Caribbean, and the Americas making a historic sea journey back to Africa — a gesture of dignity, belonging, and cultural reconnection. In a moving encounter in Brasília, President Lula received Soyinka, touched foreheads with him, and declared: “The grace on you, I ask it upon myself.” Lula affirmed his government’s commitment to HVR, describing it as a landmark opportunity to heal the wounds of […]

Tinubu Urged to Sack Underperforming Ministers — Nataro

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Kebbi State governorship candidate, Mallam Salihu Isa Nataro, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reshuffle his cabinet by removing underperforming ministers ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Nataro, a public finance expert and reform advocate, said while the President’s economic policies were beginning to yield results, a radical cabinet overhaul was necessary to strengthen the Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged Tinubu not to retain any minister whose presence could undermine public confidence in the administration. Referring to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, he advised that the President consider redeploying him if security and public perception indicated risks to the government’s image. “The President has recorded tremendous achievements alone, without adequate complementary helping hands from his cabinet, where about 85 per cent […]

FG Moves to Strengthen Health Financing, Cut Foreign Aid Reliance

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its plan to boost health financing by mobilising more domestic resources and reducing dependence on foreign aid. The goal is to make quality healthcare accessible to all Nigerians without pushing families into financial hardship. Speaking at the National Health Financing Policy Dialogue in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adekunle Salako, said Nigeria aims to enroll at least 44 million citizens in the National Health Insurance Scheme by 2030. This move, he explained, will reduce out-of-pocket health expenses, which currently stand at about 70 percent — one of the highest rates globally. The dialogue, themed “Reimagining a New Era of Health Financing,” was organised by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to chart sustainable funding strategies for universal health coverage (UHC). Salako noted that President Bola Tinubu has prioritised health reforms […]

Shea Nut Export Ban Worries Traders as Prices Drop

Nigeria’s recent six-month ban on shea nut exports has sparked concern among industry players, with traders warning of possible contract defaults, even as processors see it as a chance to boost domestic capacity. The policy, announced earlier this month by President Bola Tinubu, is designed to protect local processors, safeguard jobs, and support a value chain where women account for 95% of pickers. However, the ban has already disrupted market activity, with shea nut prices falling by one-third to ₦800,000 per tonne, according to data from Lagos-based consultancy Vestance. “Exports made the market vibrant. Local demand is not as high as local supply,” Vestance CEO, Rildwan Bello, told Bloomberg. “The idea of growing the local industry doesn’t happen overnight. You don’t set up a processing industry within two months. The manner of the implementation leaves a lot to be desired.” […]

FG to Commercialise Technical Volunteers Scheme – NTAC DG

The Federal Government is preparing to commercialise the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) volunteer programme, according to the agency’s Director-General, Dr. Yusuf Yakub. Yakub disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during the deployment exercise of 20 Technical Aid Corps (TAC) volunteers, made up of doctors and nurses, to The Gambia. He explained that commercialising the scheme will not only help partner nations fill professional gaps but also address Nigeria’s unemployment challenges by engaging young experts who are currently underutilised. “We have an abundance of unemployed youths in Nigeria and several skilled professionals who are not fully engaged, while the world is in need of experts to fill gaps,” Yakub said. He noted that the performance of Nigerian volunteers in the past had earned the programme international credibility, citing Jamaica’s recent request for 400 Nigerian professionals as an example of growing […]

Akpabio Urges Nigerians to Safeguard Public Facilities

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to take responsibility for protecting and maintaining government-owned facilities in their communities. He made the appeal on Tuesday during the commissioning of constituency projects in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said his role as a lawmaker is to provide projects that benefit the people, while citizens must ensure the facilities are well-maintained. “You, as the beneficiaries of these projects, owe the government a duty to protect the facilities so that they won’t be vandalised or destroyed by enemies of progress,” he said. Akpabio stressed that communities should “own” the projects, noting that neglect or vandalism discourages further government investment. He also reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to grassroots development and economic empowerment. […]
