Protest hits Madrid over kidnappings of Nigerian schoolchildren

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Nigerian embassy in Madrid on Saturday to protest the wave of school kidnappings in Nigeria and demand stronger international and domestic action. The rally was sparked by the abduction of more than 250 students from a Catholic school in northern Nigeria last week, which rights groups say is part of a years‑long pattern of mass student kidnappings. Christiana Wariboko, president of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, told the crowd they were speaking “on behalf of Christians” and urged foreign governments and institutions to intervene over what she described as continued killings of Nigerian Christians. The Madrid protest also highlighted a separate attack on a predominantly Muslim school in Kebbi State, where 30 students were seized before being freed by authorities, underscoring that kidnappers target schools of different faiths, often for ransom. The demonstrations […]

Tinubu declares security emergency backs state police

President Bola Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency and backed the creation of state police as Nigeria confronts rising attacks, mass abductions and banditry. He said the Federal Government would support state security outfits and urged the National Assembly to amend laws so that states that want state police can establish them. Tinubu ordered large-scale recruitment across the Armed Forces and police as part of the emergency response. The police were directed to recruit 20,000 extra personnel, raising the current intake to 50,000, convert National Youth Service Corps camps into temporary training centres and retrain officers withdrawn from VIP duties for deployment to high-risk areas. The President also authorised the Department of State Services to deploy trained forest guards to clear terrorists and bandits from forests and recruit more operatives. He described the situation as a national emergency that […]

US Congress seeks visa bans, asset freezes on Miyetti Allah

A new bill introduced in the United States Congress seeks to impose visa bans and asset freezes on members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore over alleged violations of religious freedom against Christians in Nigeria. The bill, sponsored by Representative Christopher Smith, follows the U.S. re-designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act — a status given to countries accused of serious violations of religious freedom. Smith praised U.S. President Donald Trump for the decision, which came amid growing tensions between Washington and Abuja over allegations of religious persecution. The Nigerian Federal Government, however, dismissed any panic, saying it has opened diplomatic discussions with the U.S. to address the concerns. Information Minister Mohammed Idris said after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting that Nigeria […]

Baba-Ahmed urges Tinubu to address Nigerians on Trump’s threat

Former Presidential Adviser, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has urged President Bola Tinubu to personally address Nigerians following the recent military threat issued by United States President Donald Trump. In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed expressed worry over the President’s continued silence after Trump accused Nigeria of allowing the killing of Christians and warned of a possible U.S. military response. He said the President’s failure to speak directly to Nigerians could be perceived as a sign of weakness at a time when decisive leadership and reassurance are needed. “If President Tinubu truly has capable advisers and understands the weight of his office, he should have spoken to Nigerians by now,” Baba-Ahmed said. “This is not the time for ministers or aides to issue statements. The President himself should reassure the country, clarify Nigeria’s position, and outline the steps […]

Bishop Urges National Prayers and Unity to End Killings

The Founder and General Overseer of Save and Serve Christ Family Church, Ibadan, Bishop (Dr.) Jide Orire, has called on Nigerians to unite in prayer and support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration as the nation battles insecurity, economic hardship, and what he described as a “spiritual assault on the conscience of humanity.” Speaking in Ibadan, Bishop Orire condemned the continued killings of Christians, Muslims, and innocent citizens across parts of the country, describing the situation as deeply disturbing. He urged the government to take stronger action to prevent further violence. “What we are witnessing today is not just insecurity; it is persecution. Christians, Muslims, and other innocent Nigerians are being slaughtered, their homes destroyed, and their places of worship desecrated,” he said. “It is heartbreaking that in a nation under God, such wickedness continues unchecked.” The cleric noted that rural […]

NARD faults FG’s claims on doctors’ welfare, says “facts must replace fiction”

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has faulted the recent statement by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare titled “FG Reaffirms Commitment to Doctors’ Welfare and Industrial Harmony in the Health Sector,” describing it as misleading and disconnected from the realities faced by medical professionals across Nigeria. In a rejoinder issued on Monday, NARD accused the ministry of presenting an “optimistic narrative” that obscures the true challenges confronting doctors. “We do not intend to join issues with the Ministry, but for the sake of transparency, truth, and the health of Nigerians, it is imperative to set the records straight, particularly for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who may have been misinformed about the true nature of our grievances,” the association said. According to NARD, the union has 19 outstanding demands repeatedly presented to the Federal Government. It described […]
