US never targeted me in Sokoto airstrikes, says Gumi

Kaduna based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed reports that he was targeted by the United States during recent joint Nigeria US airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State. He described the claims as fake news, explaining that people had misinterpreted an old video in which he spoke about threats to his life more than a decade ago. Gumi said the viral clip being shared online referred to an incident in August 2012, when he was allegedly marked for assassination by Boko Haram near his residence. According to him, two suspected attackers died after the explosive device they were carrying reportedly detonated before they could reach him, and the episode had nothing to do with the latest air operations in Sokoto. In a statement posted on his official social media page, the cleric insisted he never suggested that US […]

US Nigeria Near Security Deal After Christian Genocide Row

The Federal Government and a visiting United States congressional delegation led by Congressman Riley Moore are close to finalising a new strategic framework to address insecurity across Nigeria. The talks follow months of tension over claims by some US lawmakers and lobby groups that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide, an allegation Abuja strongly rejects. Moore, who has been one of the most vocal critics of Nigeria’s handling of attacks on Christian communities, said the latest meetings in Abuja with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other officials were “productive and positive”. He disclosed that both sides discussed concrete actions which, if fully carried out, could significantly enhance security nationwide. According to Moore, the emerging framework focuses on strengthening intelligence sharing, improving early warning systems, supporting communities vulnerable to terrorism and farmer herder violence, and tightening accountability for security abuses. Boko Haram has lasted longer than civil war Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the Boko Haram insurgency has now lasted for about 15 years, making it longer than the Nigerian civil war. He described the prolonged conflict as a serious failure in addressing insecurity and development challenges in the country. Obasanjo spoke while comparing the three year civil war to the insurgency which began around 2009 and has continued despite several military operations. He said the situation shows that Nigeria has not tackled the root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment and poor governance. He also warned that long running conflicts weaken national unity and drain resources that should be used for education, health and infrastructure. Obasanjo called for a comprehensive approach that combines security action with dialogue, economic opportunities and community based solutions. The former president urged current leaders to learn from past mistakes and design policies […]
