Australian PM booed at Bondi attack memorial

Australians have held a nationwide minute of silence for the victims of the deadly attack on a Jewish event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, one week after the shooting. At 18:47 local time, the exact moment the gunman opened fire, crowds at Bondi and people across the country paused to remember the 15 people killed and many others injured. The memorial at Bondi Beach took place under heavy security, with armed riot police, cordoned off areas and a police vessel offshore, an unusual sight for many in Australia. Hundreds of people, including many from the Jewish community wearing kippas or wrapped in Australian flags, gathered to pay their respects and hear speeches after the silence. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was loudly booed as he arrived at the ceremony, reflecting deep anger among sections of the Jewish community over a sharp rise […]

Australia says Bondi Beach mass shooting may have been ISIS inspired

Australian authorities say evidence suggests the mass shooting at Bondi Beach that left at least 15 people dead may have been inspired by the Islamic State group. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said investigators found items indicating links to ISIS, including Islamic State flags in a vehicle linked to the alleged attackers. The shooting happened on Sunday during a Hanukkah event, when two alleged gunmen, Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24 year old son, Naveed Akram, opened fire on crowds near the beach. Officials have described the attack as an anti semitic terrorist incident and are examining the suspects’ activities in the weeks and months leading up to the killings. Albanese told reporters that the discovery of ISIS flags formed part of the emerging evidence about the motive. He condemned what he called a “radical perversion of Islam,” saying extremist ideology […]

Australia to tighten hate speech laws after Bondi attack

Australia’s government has announced tougher measures against hate speech in the wake of a deadly attack at Bondi Beach that targeted a Jewish community event. Speaking in Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the new approach aims to curb hate, division and radicalisation, following Sunday’s shooting during celebrations marking the first day of Hanukkah, which left 15 people dead. Authorities say the attack was ideologically motivated and has heightened concerns about antisemitism and violent extremism in the country. Under the proposed reforms, new legislation will strengthen penalties for hate-related offences, including the creation of a federal crime of aggravated hate speech. Courts will also be required to consider hate as an aggravating factor when sentencing crimes involving online threats and harassment. Religious leaders or public figures who incite violence could face additional sanctions. The government also plans to expand the […]

Australian PM links Bondi Beach mass shooting to Islamic State ideology

Australian authorities say a father and son, Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed, opened fire on crowds gathered at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday evening during a Hanukkah celebration, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more. Officials believe the attack was aimed at terrorising Australia’s Jewish community, making it one of the country’s deadliest mass shootings in decades. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said early investigations suggest the pair were motivated by “Islamic State ideology”, describing it as an “ideology of hate” that has fuelled extremism worldwide for more than a decade. Police later said they found improvised explosive devices and two homemade ISIS-style flags in a car registered to Naveed that was parked near the beach. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that officers recovered the bombs and flags after the shooting. Investigators are now examining the […]
