Two newly released commemorative coins from the Royal Australian Mint have sparked debate after many observers said the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II bears little resemblance to the late monarch.
The coins, a $5 piece and a 50-cent silver coin, were produced to mark the 100th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth and were made available through an online ballot that closed on Wednesday. Soon after their release, images of the coins circulated online, prompting mixed reactions.
Several social media users were openly critical of the design. Some described the portrait as unflattering, while others said they would not have recognised the Queen without her signature hairstyle and pearls. A number of commenters even compared the image to fictional characters from television and film.
In response, the Royal Australian Mint defended the artwork, explaining that designs can appear different once engraved in metal. A spokesperson noted that coin portraits do not always reflect the full detail or balance of the original concept once translated into a physical form.
Not all reactions were negative. Some collectors and royal supporters praised the mint for honouring Queen Elizabeth II, describing the coins as meaningful tributes. Interest remained strong despite the criticism, with collectors reporting high demand during the ballot process.
Australian media later confirmed that the silver proof versions had sold out, with only limited stock remaining through the mint’s shop and contact centre. In total, 30,000 of the 50-cent coins and 5,000 of the $5 coins were produced. None will enter everyday circulation, as they are intended solely for collectors.
Beyond the portrait, the coins include symbolic elements representing the Queen’s life and legacy. These include images of horses and corgis, references to the arts, floral motifs such as roses and lily of the valley, and Australia’s national flower, the golden wattle. The design also incorporates the Queen’s Royal Cypher, the St Edward’s Crown, and an emblem recognising her wartime service.
The reverse side of both coins features a profile portrait of King Charles III, marking the continuation of the monarchy.

Trump to feature his picture in new US passports
The United States will begin issuing a limited number of new passports that include a picture of President Donald Trump inside the booklet, officials have confirmed. The design is part of a special edition created to mark the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence in July.
