Dickson, Obi, Kwankwaso arrive NDC convention

National leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has arrived at the party’s inaugural national convention in Abuja alongside former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Their presence at the event signals a major step in the consolidation of a new opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. The duo had earlier held a closed door strategy meeting with Dickson in Abuja, where they discussed ideology, governance blueprint and shared priorities such as education, youth empowerment, security and national unity. Two other lawmakers from Kaduna State, Suleiman Yahaya Richifa and Umar Ajilo, also left the Peoples Democratic Party to join the ADC. Akpabio says ADC is dead amid fresh National Assembly defections

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the African Democratic Congress is “dead” following a fresh wave of defections by its lawmakers in the National Assembly. He made the remark during plenary while reading letters from senators and members of the House of Representatives who announced their exit from the party. Akpabio’s comment came shortly after he read the resignation letter of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who defected from the ADC to the Labour Party. As more defection letters were tabled, the Senate President joked that lawmakers leaving the ADC should “just compile everything in one paper” because, in his view, “ADC is dead.” Abaribe, who represents Abia South, said in his letter that his decision was driven by “ongoing legal uncertainties, multiple court cases and leadership crises” within the ADC. He described remaining in the party under such conditions as […]

Obi, Kwankwaso set to dump ADC for NDC

Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are set to leave the African Democratic Congress and join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as opposition realignment gathers pace ahead of the 2027 elections. Key figures in the Kwankwasiyya movement say talks with NDC leaders are now at an advanced stage, with only minor details left to be resolved. According to leaders of the Obi Kwankwaso alliance, often called the OK Movement, the decision follows growing uncertainty over the legal and leadership situation in the ADC. They fear that ongoing court cases and internal disputes could weaken the party’s ability to serve as a stable platform for a broad opposition coalition. A prominent Kwankwasiyya chieftain, Saifullahi Mohammed, disclosed that stakeholders from all 44 local government areas of Kano State met at Kwankwaso’s residence and unanimously endorsed the move to the NDC. 2027 polls: Supreme Court to decide PDP, ADC fate today

The Supreme Court will today deliver key judgments that will decide the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections. The apex court is set to rule on four appeals linked to leadership crises tearing through the two opposition parties. In the case of the PDP, the appeals centre on the validity of the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. A faction led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is asking the court to uphold the convention and its decisions, while rival groups insist due process was not followed. Previous rulings from lower courts faulted the PDP for obtaining conflicting orders from courts of equal rank over its internal dispute. One Court of Appeal decision described the party’s actions as an abuse of […]

Supreme Court reserves judgment in David Mark’s appeal on ADC leadership tussle

The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in an appeal filed by a factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the party’s leadership dispute. A five member panel of the apex court headed by Justice Mohammed Garba announced on Wednesday that the date for the judgment would be communicated to lawyers representing all parties in the case. The decision followed the adoption of briefs by counsel, who each urged the court to grant the reliefs sought by their clients. The appeal, marked SC/CV/180/2026, was lodged by David Mark and challenges the March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal. The appellate court had dismissed his appeal against a September 4, 2025 ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which refused to grant injunctive reliefs sought in an ex parte application filed by ADC chieftain […]

ADC NEC takes over party administration, appoints interim leadership

The National Executive Council of the African Democratic Congress has announced that it is taking over the administration of the party and putting in place an interim leadership structure. The move follows a prolonged leadership tussle and multiple court cases over who legally controls the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections. At an emergency NEC meeting in Abuja, key stakeholders resolved to sideline the warring factions and mandated a caretaker team to manage the party’s affairs until a national convention is held. Leaders aligned with former interim chairman David Mark and other elders said the step became necessary to stabilise the party and restore confidence among members and aspirants. The interim leadership has been tasked with organising a credible national convention, reconciling aggrieved blocs and ensuring strict adherence to the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. NEC members also warned […]
