Court orders INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, AA, APP, and ZLP

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). Justice Peter Lifu delivered the judgement on Monday, ruling that the parties persistently failed to meet the electoral performance thresholds set in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The suit was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to compel INEC to deregister parties that do not comply with constitutional requirements under the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC regulations. Among its reliefs, the plaintiff asked the court to declare that INEC has a constitutional duty to deregister parties failing to meet electoral thresholds. The forum also urged the court to […]

Ex-Police Commissioner Owoseni Withdraws From Oyo Accord Gov Primary

Former Lagos and Benue State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni (retd.), has reportedly withdrawn from the race for the Accord Party governorship ticket in Oyo State. Owoseni, who only recently picked the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms to join the 2027 governorship race, was expected to battle popular Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat for the Accord ticket. He had earlier said his ambition was driven by a desire to strengthen Accord as a people-focused party and offer credible leadership rather than engage in vote-buying or political intimidation. Details of his withdrawal were still sketchy at press time, but party insiders suggest internal consultations and strategic realignments within Accord may have influenced his decision. Observers are now watching to see how his exit will shape the party’s primaries and the chances of other aspirants ahead of the 2027 governorship election […]

Court sets March 24 ruling on suit to deregister ADC, Accord, others

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed March 24 for its ruling on a suit seeking to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister four political parties over alleged failure to meet constitutional requirements. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/25, was filed by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators, with INEC, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the African Democratic Congress, Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party and Action Alliance listed as defendants. Initially, only the ADC was mentioned, but the suit was later amended to include the other parties. The group argues that INEC is constitutionally required to deregister parties that do not attain minimum electoral performance, such as winning at least 25 per cent of votes in one state during a presidential election or securing any elective seat at federal, state or local government level. In […]

Accord Crisis Deepens As Faction Picks Bamigbola As Osun Guber Candidate

In a new twist to the unfolding drama within the Accord Party in Osun State, a faction of the party has elected Bamigbola as its governorship candidate for the 2026 election. The primary, held on Sunday, reportedly drew about 300 delegates from across the state who endorsed him as their preferred flagbearer. This move comes only days after Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared winner of another Accord governorship primary for the same 2026 poll. Adeleke, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, had earlier secured 145 out of 150 delegate votes in a primary conducted under the supervision of the party’s national leadership. The emergence of two parallel candidates highlights sharp factional splits within the party’s state structure. While the Adeleke camp enjoys visible backing from the national leadership, the Bamigbola group insists its process reflects the […]
