2027: British govt has no preferred candidate, says envoy

The British government has declared that it has no preferred candidate or political party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. British Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria, Gill Lever, made this known during a courtesy visit to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in Ilorin. Lever stressed that the United Kingdom’s interest is in seeing a peaceful, free and credible electoral process, not in backing any particular contender. She explained that the UK would continue to work with whoever Nigerians elect, in line with its long-standing policy of respecting the country’s sovereignty and the will of its citizens. INEC deadline: Opposition parties rush to submit membership registers

Opposition political parties across Nigeria have embarked on a last minute rush to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) deadline for submitting their membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC had extended the final date for the exercise to May 10, 2026, following earlier complaints from parties that the initial window was too tight. Under Section 77(4) of the 2026 Electoral Act, every registered political party is required to submit its membership register to INEC not later than 21 days before the conduct of its primaries. The commission has repeatedly stressed that only members whose names appear in the submitted registers will be eligible to vote or be voted for during party primaries. In the last 48 hours leading up to the deadline, national secretariats of several opposition parties have been busy collating and uploading names from […]

2027: Odds favour Obi, Kwankwaso as NDC zones presidency to South

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria and the vice‑presidential slot to the North, a move widely seen as boosting the chances of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso emerging as the party’s leading ticket. Delegates at the party’s maiden national convention in Abuja adopted a resolution restricting the presidential ticket to the South for a single four year term, after which power would rotate to the North in 2031. The zoning motion, moved by Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was unanimously endorsed by delegates. Party leaders said the arrangement was designed to promote fairness, balance and internal stability while addressing long running agitations over power rotation between regions. Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso publicly backed the decision, telling delegates that zoning the […]

PDP crisis: Wike accuses Turaki, others of flouting court rulings

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and influential Peoples Democratic Party leader, Nyesom Wike, has accused Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and his allies of disregarding clear court rulings in the ongoing PDP leadership crisis. He said the faction has continued to act in open defiance of binding judgments on the party’s disputed convention and national executive. Wike insisted that a series of court decisions, including those of the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, have already settled the questions around the legality of the PDP convention held in Ibadan and the leadership it produced. He accused the Turaki camp of twisting and misrepresenting the judgments to confuse party members and the public. According to him, the Court of Appeal ruling delivered on March 9 upheld an earlier Federal High Court decision that the processes leading to the […]

Akpabio says ADC is dead amid fresh National Assembly defections

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the African Democratic Congress is “dead” following a fresh wave of defections by its lawmakers in the National Assembly. Akpabio’s comment came shortly after he read the resignation letter of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who defected from the ADC to the Labour Party. As more defection letters were tabled, the Senate President joked that lawmakers leaving the ADC should “just compile everything in one paper” because, in his view, “ADC is dead.” Abaribe, who represents Abia South, said in his letter that his decision was driven by “ongoing legal uncertainties, multiple court cases and leadership crises” within the ADC. He described remaining in the party under such conditions as […]
