Opposition political parties across Nigeria have embarked on a last minute rush to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) deadline for submitting their membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC had extended the final date for the exercise to May 10, 2026, following earlier complaints from parties that the initial window was too tight.
Under Section 77(4) of the 2026 Electoral Act, every registered political party is required to submit its membership register to INEC not later than 21 days before the conduct of its primaries. The commission has repeatedly stressed that only members whose names appear in the submitted registers will be eligible to vote or be voted for during party primaries.
In the last 48 hours leading up to the deadline, national secretariats of several opposition parties have been busy collating and uploading names from ward and local government chapters nationwide. Officials say the pressure has been intense as parties strive to clean up duplicated entries, remove defectors and capture new members recruited during recent drives.
Analysts note that the membership register requirement could significantly reshape internal power dynamics, since factions that control the lists effectively control who votes in primaries. Some smaller and newer parties have reportedly struggled with logistics, data management and the cost of nationwide registration, raising concerns about their ability to fully comply.
INEC, however, has maintained that there will be no further extension beyond May 10, insisting that timely submission is crucial to planning and monitoring party primaries. The commission has warned that parties which fail to submit comprehensive registers risk disputes over their primaries and may face sanctions under the Electoral Act.

Ego, inner competition undermine collaborations in Afrobeats – Joeboy
Afrobeats singer Joeboy has decried the growing impact of ego and inner competition on collaborations among Nigerian artists. He said many artistes now approach joint projects with a mindset of rivalry instead of focusing on making timeless music together. According to him, some colleagues only agree to collaborate when they think they will gain more numbers, clout or validation than the other party. Joeboy noted that this attitude makes it difficult to build sincere, long-term partnerships of the kind that once helped push Afrobeats to global prominence. He explained that behind the scenes, a lot of artistes constantly monitor streams, charts and social media buzz, even while publicly preaching unity and “love” in the industry. This quiet comparison culture, he argued, breeds resentment and silently kills the spirit of true collaboration. Despite these challenges, Joeboy maintained that collaborations remain one […]

Dangote exports 1.66bn litres fuel amid US–Iran tensions
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has exported an estimated 1.66 billion litres of refined fuel products in April 2026 as global energy markets reel from the impact of the US–Iran war. The record export volume came as buyers in Africa, Europe and other regions scrambled for alternative supplies amid fears of disruptions to traditional shipping routes in the Middle East. Industry reports show that the refinery, Africa’s largest with a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has ramped up shipments of diesel, petrol and jet fuel in recent months. The April figure alone represents a sharp jump compared to earlier months, with exports of aviation fuel rising to an average of about 160,000 barrels per day at the height of the crisis. Analysts say the surge in exports underscores Dangote’s growing role as a stabilising force in regional fuel supply, helping […]

Court sentences ex-power minister Saleh Mamman to 75 years over ₦33.8bn fraud
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years in prison after finding him guilty of diverting about ₦33.8 billion in public funds. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Wednesday, convicting Mamman on all 12 counts of money laundering and fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The court held that the EFCC proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mamman diverted funds earmarked for key national power projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power schemes. Investigators told the court that large sums were moved through contractors and cronies before being traced to the former minister’s personal accounts and assets. Justice Omotosho noted that Mamman personally benefited from the fraud, including the cash payment of 655,700 dollars (about ₦200 million) for a property in Abuja, in […]
