Solo Bobsled Run Shocks at St. Moritz

Article arrow_drop_down

During a World Cup race in St. Moritz, Switzerland, U.S. bobsled driver Kris Horn experienced a dramatic and dangerous run after a major failure at the start left him alone in the sled.

As the race began, Horn entered the four-man sled first, following standard procedure. However, his teammates Ryan Rager, Hunter Powell, and Caleb Furnell all struggled to get in. Rager appeared to slip first, setting off a chain reaction. Powell was thrown toward the side of the track and hit the icy surface, while Furnell was also unable to reach his position in time. Despite the chaos, all three athletes escaped serious injury, and medical checks later confirmed there were no fractures.

Powell later said he was sore but expected to recover within a few days.

With no additional weight or brakeman, Horn had no choice but to continue down the course alone. The sled reached speeds of about 75 miles per hour during the roughly one-minute run, making the descent extremely unstable. After crossing the finish line, Horn quickly moved to the back of the sled and managed to pull the brakes himself, bringing it safely to a stop.

Coaches and athletes from other teams rushed to check on him as the sled came to rest. Horn, who began his bobsled career as a brakeman, showed he was unhurt by waving to television cameras.

USA Bobsled head coach Chris Fogt said the team was fortunate the situation did not end more seriously.

The incident capped a difficult weekend for Horn, who had also crashed in the two-man event a day earlier. His brakeman in that race, Carsten Vissering, suffered minor injuries and was unable to compete in Sunday’s four-man race, which is why Rager stepped in.

With only one World Cup weekend remaining before the U.S. team for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics is selected, Horn is still expected to be named as one of the country’s top bobsled drivers, alongside Frank Del Duca.

India Faces Pressure From Iran War

As the conflict involving Iran enters its third month with no clear resolution in sight, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to reduce spending and conserve resources amid growing economic pressure linked to rising global energy costs. Speaking during a public event in Hyderabad, Modi encouraged Indians to work from home when possible, limit unnecessary foreign travel, reduce fuel consumption and avoid excessive purchases of gold. The appeal has drawn comparisons to the Covid-19 period, when the government relied on nationwide public participation to manage economic and social challenges. This time, the government’s focus is on protecting India’s foreign exchange reserves and limiting pressure on the national economy as the war in the Middle East disrupts global energy markets. India remains heavily dependent on imported energy, purchasing nearly 90% of its crude oil and about half of its […]

Arbeloa told me I’ve been demoted to fourth striker – Mbappé

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has claimed that head coach Álvaro Arbeloa told him he is now only the fourth-choice striker at the club. The France captain made the remark after starting on the bench in Los Blancos’ 2–0 La Liga win over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, insisted he was fully fit and ready to start the match. “I’m 100% fine. I didn’t play because, for the coach, I’ve been the fourth-choice striker behind (Franco) Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo,” he told reporters in the mixed zone. The 27-year-old explained that Arbeloa opted to start Vinícius Júnior and youngster Gonzalo García in attack, with teenage sensation Mastantuono also ahead of him in the pecking order. “I was ready to start, but Arbeloa informed me that I am now the fourth striker. Man City battle fatigue ahead of FA Cup final clash with troubled Chelsea

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are battling mounting fatigue as they prepare to face a troubled Chelsea side in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley. City are chasing a domestic cup double while still locked in a tight Premier League title race with Arsenal, leaving the squad stretched by a relentless schedule. Guardiola’s men were in league action as recently as Wednesday, when they beat Crystal Palace 3–0 to close the gap on Arsenal to two points with two games remaining. In contrast, Chelsea have had a full week to rest and train at Cobham, a gap the City boss believes could hand the London club a physical edge at Wembley. “After the FA Cup, we have Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” Guardiola said. “We have to travel to […]

Hotels across several host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are reporting weaker-than-expected bookings despite growing public excitement ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In cities such as Houston, Miami, Kansas City and New York, World Cup advertising and merchandise have become increasingly visible as preparations intensify for the competition. However, many hotel operators say the anticipated surge in reservations has yet to materialize. According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, a large number of hotels in host cities are currently recording lower booking levels compared to the same period last year. Several hotel owners and managers told the BBC they expected significantly stronger demand months before the tournament begins. Deidre Mathis, owner of the Wanderstay Boutique Hotel in Houston, said her establishment remains far below projected occupancy levels despite being located near […]

According to reports, the half-time performance is expected to last around 11 minutes, although earlier speculation suggested it could run beyond the traditional 15-minute interval allowed under football regulations. Last year’s Club World Cup final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain featured a half-time show that lasted more than 24 minutes. While pre-match entertainment has become common at major football events such as the UEFA Champions League final, this will mark the first official half-time show ever staged during a FIFA World Cup final.
