Back to back powerful earthquakes in Venezuela have killed at least 164 people and injured 971 others, according to the country’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez.
The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.2, struck about 100 miles west of the capital Caracas and was followed less than a minute later by a second tremor measuring 7.5. The twin quakes caused widespread damage, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira and in parts of Caracas.
Rodriguez has described La Guaira as a disaster zone, with extensive building collapses reported and many people feared trapped under the rubble. Local officials said search and rescue teams are still detecting signs of life beneath collapsed structures and have rescued dozens of survivors so far.
Authorities warned that the current death toll could rise significantly as rescue and recovery operations continue. The US Geological Survey, USGS, issued a red alert and estimated there is a high probability that fatalities could reach into the thousands. The agency also said the economic losses could amount to between 1 and 5 percent of Venezuela’s gross domestic product.
A tracking website reported more than 11,000 people registered as affected, with thousands still unaccounted for. Emergency services are working across several states to clear debris, search damaged buildings and provide medical care to the injured.
Images and video from local and international media show collapsed homes, damaged hotels and residential buildings along the Caribbean coast, and residents sleeping outdoors out of fear of further tremors. Officials have urged people in affected areas to stay away from damaged structures and follow safety instructions from emergency teams.
Venezuela has requested international assistance, and additional rescue teams are expected to arrive to support ongoing operations. Authorities say their priority is to save as many lives as possible while stabilising critical infrastructure and restoring basic services in the worst hit communities.
