El Rufai risks two year jail term on new cybercrime charges

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai faces up to two years in prison if convicted on fresh cybercrime charges filed against him over the alleged interception of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone calls. The Department of State Services accuses him of admitting on live television that he listened to recordings of Ribadu’s private conversations obtained through illegal phone tapping. The three count charge, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is based on provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003. In the first count, prosecutors say El Rufai confessed during an Arise TV interview on February 13 that he and others unlawfully intercepted the NSA’s communications, an offence under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes Act. The second count alleges that he knew and associated with the person who […]

Labour warns of looming job losses over NAFDAC sachet alcohol ban

Food and beverage sector unions have warned the Federal Government that NAFDAC’s enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol and small PET bottles could trigger massive job losses and factory shutdowns. They say the continued sealing of production lines and depots is already disrupting operations in breweries and distilleries across the country. Leaders of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association and the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees protested again at NAFDAC’s Lagos office, demanding that the agency obey the recent directive suspending the crackdown. They argue that with the national alcohol policy already signed, NAFDAC should have lifted restrictions instead of moving to close more factories. Union officials estimate that the policy could threaten hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in manufacturing, logistics and retail. They also warn that wiping out regulated sachet […]

Zam: Natasha is not a North Central commission committee member

Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission, Titus Zam, says Kogi Central lawmaker Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan is not a member of his committee, contrary to her claims. He said she was therefore not invited to the commission’s recent budget defence session and had no reason to expect her name on the attendance register. The clarification follows a confrontation at the National Assembly after Senator Akpoti Uduaghan arrived for the NCDC budget defence and reportedly complained that her name was missing from the committee’s attendance list. She later went to Zam’s office to seek an explanation, leading to a heated exchange and a scuffle involving aides from both sides. In his statement, Zam insisted that committee membership is decided by the Senate Committee on Selection, not by regional entitlement. He noted that two other senators from […]

Reps in rowdy session over move to reopen Electoral Act amendment

The House of Representatives has descended into a rowdy session over a move to rescind its earlier decision on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2025 and reopen it for fresh consideration. The controversial step came during an emergency sitting convened to address issues raised by the newly released 2027 election timetable from the Independent National Electoral Commission. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas presided over the sparsely attended plenary where the only item on the Order Paper was a motion to rescind the House’s approval of the amendment bill and recommit it to the Committee of the Whole. The motion was moved by the Chairman of the Rules and Business Committee, Francis Waive, who argued that some provisions had created inconsistencies and unintended consequences that could affect the 2027 polls. When the Speaker put the motion to voice vote, the loudest response appeared […]

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have killed a Boko Haram commander and recovered almost N40 million in cash during an operation in Borno State. The Nigerian Army said the troops intercepted a suspicious vehicle believed to be moving funds for the terror group in the north east. According to military sources, the operation followed credible intelligence that insurgents were relocating large sums of money meant for logistics, recruitment and the purchase of weapons. When soldiers attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants opened fire, leading to a gun battle in which the Boko Haram commander and some of his escorts were neutralised. After the clash, troops searched the vehicle and found bundles of cash amounting to about N37 million, along with mobile phones and other items. The money is suspected to be ransom payments or proceeds from illegal levies imposed […]

The Department of State Services has filed cybercrime charges against former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai over the alleged unlawful interception of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone communications. The case was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, days after El Rufai claimed in a live TV interview that he listened to a tapped phone call in which Ribadu allegedly ordered security agents to detain him. According to court documents, prosecutors allege that El Rufai, 65, admitted during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on 13 February that he and unnamed associates had access to Ribadu’s private phone conversations. The government says the alleged act violates Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024, which criminalises unlawful interception of communications. Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai has accused the Office of the National Security Adviser, led by Nuhu Ribadu, of procuring an odourless and highly poisonous chemical substance. He raised the alarm in a letter asking the NSA to explain why about 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate were allegedly imported from a supplier in Poland. In the letter, which he shared on his social media page, El Rufai described thallium sulphate as a dangerous and tightly regulated substance. He said information about the procurement had reached opposition leaders and insisted that Nigerians deserve full transparency on the intended use.
