Court adjourns Tukur Mamu’s fundamental rights suit against AGF

Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the new date for adoption of final written addresses after asking counsel to further address the court on the relationship between Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 49 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022. The matter had earlier come up for adoption of written addresses but could not proceed. Mamu, through his lawyer Johnson Usman (SAN), argues that the AGF’s decision to label him a terrorist in official and media communications violates his right to presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of the Constitution. He contends that it is illegal, immoral and against religious principles to brand him a terrorist before any conviction by the court where he is facing trial. Usman told the court that he attached printouts of media reports where Mamu was described as a terrorist to support the […]

In separate statements, the APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, and the Lagos State chapter hailed the outcomes as a “resounding endorsement” of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. They argued that voters used the FCT council polls and by elections in Rivers and Kano to reward the ruling party for what they called bold leadership, infrastructure projects and efforts to stabilise the economy. 2027 polls: APC, four parties set as 16 others battle candidate crises

With less than a year to the start of candidate submissions for the 2027 general elections, only the ruling All Progressives Congress and four other parties are considered ready, while about 16 others are entangled in leadership and candidate selection crises. The situation follows the release of the 2027 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has intensified pressure on parties to put their houses in order. The APC is seen as the most organised, with President Bola Tinubu widely expected to seek a second term and face little or no internal challenge for the presidential ticket, even though party leaders insist the race remains formally open. A few smaller parties, including some with regional strength, have also begun early consultations and are close to resolving their presidential and governorship choices. In contrast, major opposition platforms like the […]
