Tinubu to opposition: Elections not won on social media

President Bola Tinubu has told opposition figures and party supporters that elections are decided by voters in communities, not by debates on social media. He spoke through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Renewed Hope Ambassadors Strategic Summit in Abuja. Tinubu urged members of the All Progressives Congress to take government policies and messages directly to wards, markets, campuses and other grassroots areas. He said this face to face engagement is vital for countering misinformation and building trust ahead of the 2027 elections. The President also called for peace within the party in Benue State. He appealed to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to reconcile with Governor Hyacinth Alia so that APC leaders in the state can work together on security and development. Tinubu praised Akume’s long public service career and […]

US Congress lists steps to tackle Christian persecution in Nigeria

The United States Congress has outlined a series of measures it says are needed to tackle the growing persecution of Christians and wider insecurity in Nigeria. Lawmakers recommended reforms in security, justice, financial oversight and foreign policy as part of a broader strategy. The proposals follow a report prepared for President Donald Trump by a congressional panel he set up to investigate the situation of Christians in Nigeria. Congress urged the president to formally classify Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, name and shame perpetrators of attacks, impose sanctions on them and keep enforcing visa bans. The report describes Nigeria as one of the deadliest places in the world to be a Christian and cites years of violent attacks, killings, kidnappings and the destruction of churches and schools by armed groups, including Fulani militias and terrorist organisations. Lawmakers said […]

Abbas: Poor power supply hurting small firms, Nigerians

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has warned that poor and costly energy supply is crippling small businesses and worsening the living conditions of Nigerians. He spoke at an investigative hearing organised by the House Committee on Renewable Energy in Abuja. Abbas said years of persistent electricity problems have created serious economic challenges and made legislative action necessary. He explained that the National Assembly amended the Electricity Act to firmly include renewable energy as part of Nigeria’s power solutions. He noted that diversifying the country’s energy mix with renewable sources would ease pressure on households and businesses while supporting sustainable growth. One key objective of the Electricity Act 2023, he said, is to provide an integrated policy that recognises all sources of power generation, transmission and distribution, including renewables. The Speaker highlighted the high cost of running generators […]

Court sets March 24 ruling on suit to deregister ADC, Accord, others

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed March 24 for its ruling on a suit seeking to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister four political parties over alleged failure to meet constitutional requirements. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/25, was filed by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators, with INEC, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the African Democratic Congress, Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party and Action Alliance listed as defendants. Initially, only the ADC was mentioned, but the suit was later amended to include the other parties. The group argues that INEC is constitutionally required to deregister parties that do not attain minimum electoral performance, such as winning at least 25 per cent of votes in one state during a presidential election or securing any elective seat at federal, state or local government level. In […]

Sokoto, UNICEF step up action on out-of-school children

The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board has stepped up efforts to reduce the high number of out-of-school children through expanded early childhood education and major reforms, according to its Executive Chairman, Umar Tambuwal. Speaking at a media dialogue on educational reform for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, Tambuwal said education is central to the state’s future and that early childhood investment is key to reversing poor learning outcomes. He explained that the years from birth to eight are critical for brain development, cognitive growth and emotional stability, especially for disadvantaged children. Tambuwal warned that lack of early learning opportunities increases the risk of school dropouts and fuels the rise in out-of-school children. He said that with UNICEF support, the board assisted 160 Early Childhood Care and Education centres in 2024 and 2025 with teaching materials and caregiver training, while UNICEF […]

IGP Egbetokun removed, to be replaced by Tunji Disu

President Donald Trump’s Nigerian counterpart, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police, paving the way for Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu to take over as the country’s new police chief. Egbetokun, who was appointed the 22nd IGP in June 2023, was reportedly directed to prepare his handover notes, with senior police and presidency sources confirming that a formal announcement and ceremony are being arranged. Sources quoted in multiple reports say Tinubu personally ordered Egbetokun’s exit amid growing controversies around his extended stay in office beyond normal retirement age, as well as internal discontent over his leadership style. Some officers described him as “power drunk” and linked his removal partly to health concerns, claiming the president wants him to focus on treatment for reported kidney related medical issues. Egbetokun’s tenure was dogged by scandals, including […]

FCT poll: Wike free to back any candidate he wants – APC

The All Progressives Congress has defended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to publicly back its candidates in the FCT Area Council elections, saying he has a constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice. The party dismissed opposition criticism of Wike’s role as misplaced and politically motivated. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said on a television programme that Wike, a former Rivers State governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains a Nigerian citizen whose freedom of association and expression is guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. He argued that nothing in the law stops the minister from campaigning for candidates in any party. Morka’s comments followed outrage in the PDP after two of its chairmanship candidates in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council stepped down and endorsed APC rivals allegedly after […]
