The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced plans to recruit and deploy 800 water marshals across Nigeria by December 2025. According to NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, the move is aimed at improving safety, curbing incessant boat mishaps, enforcing life jacket compliance, and monitoring unauthorised loading points. Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, Oyebamiji said the marshals would also be tasked with sensitising passengers and operators on safe navigation practices. “The Federal Government is doing a wonderful job on water safety. We currently have between 350 and 450 water marshals, but the goal is to increase the number to ensure authorised jetties across the country have more than one marshal to enforce safety rules,” he said. FG launches Safe Blood Project to expand access nationwide

The Federal Government has launched a new initiative to transform blood transfusion services across Nigeria, pledging that no citizen should lose their life due to the unavailability of safe blood. The programme, called “The Safe Blood Project,” is the country’s first national training scheme focused on transfusion safety. It was unveiled at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, and is coordinated by the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA). Nigeria has long struggled with inadequate blood supply, relying heavily on family replacement and paid donors, a practice that experts say contributes to avoidable deaths — especially among women during childbirth, children with severe anaemia, and accident victims. The initiative will: Train health workers in modern transfusion medicine. Strengthen laboratories for effective screening and storage. Institutionalise voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation. Serve as a hub for research and innovation to guide policy. Prof. […]

Yemi Solade: My life more peaceful since leaving church

Veteran Nollywood actor, Yemi Solade, has revealed that his life has been more peaceful since he stopped attending church in 2013. Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, Solade said he decided to withdraw from church after a pastor cautioned him against working on Sundays, a move he found impractical as an actor responsible for his family’s wellbeing. He recalled, “I got into the church with my wife in 2013. I was told to tell producers not to call me for work on Sundays, and I found it disturbing. It is from that work I contribute financially to the church.” Solade explained that contrary to popular belief that people’s lives decline when they stop attending church, his experience has been different. “There’s this notion that if you don’t attend church, your life will nosedive. I have not seen anything change. Rather, […]
