Israeli air and ground attacks are intensifying on Gaza City, as plans to seize the territory’s largest urban area put nearly a million Palestinians under mounting pressure. Continuous explosions have been reported in the north and east of the city, while Israeli forces also returned to Jabalia refugee camp to demolish buildings.
Heavy Casualties Reported
According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, 64 people were killed and almost 300 injured in the past 24 hours alone. The ministry says the overall toll since October 2023 has risen to 62,686 deaths and 157,951 injuries.
Israel launched its operation in Gaza following the October 7 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 others taken hostage.
Overnight strikes targeted Zeitoun and Shejayia districts, while tank fire hit the Sabra neighborhood. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said its return to Jabalia in the north aimed to prevent Hamas from re-establishing operations there.
“The troops’ activity enables the expansion of the fighting to additional areas and prevents Hamas terrorists from returning,” the IDF said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to push ahead with the offensive despite mounting international criticism. Around 60,000 reservists are being called up as Israel prepares to expand operations deeper into Gaza City.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that one of its staff members, detained in Gaza since July 21, has been released by the IDF. No further details have been provided on the worker’s identity or the reasons for detention.
