Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate and extract individuals believed to be trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Accra’s North Industrial Area following a structural failure that has left several people injured.
According to Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service’s communications team, three people have so far been rescued from the scene and are currently receiving medical treatment. However, emergency responders fear that at least three more individuals may still be trapped under the debris.
Speaking at the site, Mr. Nartey explained that rescue operations have been slowed by the absence of earth-moving equipment needed to remove large sections of collapsed concrete and debris safely.
He disclosed that the Fire Service has requested assistance from the military, while the Mayor of Accra has also facilitated the deployment of heavy machinery to support the operation.
“We have attempted to create access points to reach those trapped, but the available space is not sufficient. At this stage, we are waiting for earth-moving equipment to arrive so we can continue the rescue efforts safely,” he said.
Mr. Nartey noted that the Ghana National Fire Service currently lacks its own earth-moving equipment, a challenge he believes affects emergency response operations during major structural collapses and similar disasters.
He expressed hope that future government investments would equip the Fire Service with the necessary machinery to improve rescue operations and reduce response times during emergencies.
Reports Suggest Additional Victim May Be Trapped
Initial information provided to rescuers indicated that two individuals remained trapped after the collapse. However, new reports suggest there could be a third victim beneath the rubble.
According to Mr. Nartey, the individual was reportedly recording footage of the aftermath of the initial collapse when another section of the building unexpectedly gave way.
Emergency officials have yet to verify the report and say confirmation will only be possible once rescue teams gain better access to the affected area.
Rescue Operation Continues
Authorities have cordoned off the area as rescue personnel work to stabilize the site and prevent further collapses. Medical teams remain on standby while emergency responders coordinate efforts to locate any remaining victims.
The incident has renewed concerns about building safety, emergency preparedness and the need for specialized rescue equipment to handle large-scale structural disasters in urban areas.
Officials have assured the public that every effort is being made to rescue those still missing and determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
